I'm so sorry for your loss.  I too know the sting of death.  The memories of good times will carry you thru these sad days.  I hope that you can surround yourself with family and those who can build you up with the comfort you need. There is the best support found in God's word.   Please read Isaiah 25:8.  Death will soon be a thing of the past and there will be no more tears.  Take care of yourself and let the sciptures fill you with hope and promise.

The "Dad" stories Daddy liked to hear, like my brother Vince's, were those that a lesson had been taught, especially if he did the teaching.  The lessons must've had impact otherwise we wouldn't be repeating them 40  years later.  

When we were all kids my Grandpop Kirkland, our beloved Mom's (Dee) father, was in the car business and had promised us all if we had good grades, when we turned 16 and had jobs to pay for our own insurance he would get us a car.  Mine was a 1968 Nova...I loved that car, it was freedom for me back in 1975!!  

Back in his heydays, Daddy raced stock cars at Pecan Park Raceway and considered himself a good mechanic, which he was; a 1968 Nova to him was a machine, to me? a cassette player on wheels.  Daddy taught me (my Mom tried, but that's another story) right here on Ibis Rd where he's lived all these years.  He taught me to parallel park between 2 pine trees at Holiday Hill Elem School and dared me to put a scratch on his truck. 

On a hot, steamy July day, I could hardly wait to drive myself for the first time to my job at Burger King @ Regency to show my friends.  However, Daddy had other plans for my first weekend with a license.  As I was leaving the house to go show off my car, he stopped me at the door and told me to meet him in the driveway.  He told me I had to learn how to change a tire, because he "wasn't always going to be around to help", I was a 16 year old girl with fun on her mind, need I say how I felt right then??

He methodically showed me how to take off and replace a tire.  He was fast and efficient at said tire changing, it took him about 15 minutes to complete the whole process.  He then got a folding chair, a tall scotch & water full of ice, and said to me, "Your turn, you aren't ...although I knew he'd come to my rescue.
leaving this driveway until you can change a tire." 

About 2 hours and lots of sweat and crying later (he just looked on whilst enjoying his beverage) I was furious, my Mom was fussing at him to give me a break, but damn it, I changed that tire!!  I learned tenacity that day.

I've never gotten a flat, so I've never had to use that lesson, but I was equipped with the knowledge to do so, ironically, thanks to the insurance we had to carry, I discovered what roadside assistance was because I didn't want to EVER have to change a tire again,

Thanks Daddy for that, and many, many lessons that I will forever be grateful you took the time to teach me.

I do some speaking for my business,  and in all situations a great story or joke is a great way to get a laugh and a start to the subject matter. This is to lighten up our sorrow I hope.

There was a time when Daddy Pope was out of work because of layoffs at St. Regis paper mill, and we had to eat. This man did whatever he could to put food in all of our mouths including plain ole' manual labor. So where the story starts.

Daddy had a tree surgery business, that's what he called it anyway (we cut down trees). And he had a nice job that was going to pay us well. I was about 17 years old and Ronnie, my brother was 13. We got to this customers house and a monster Magnolia was the piece of cake to make boo-coo bucks on it. The issue, Daddy was not a small man and normal climbing gear would not work because of all the lower branches, so guess who got the chore of the climb. 
After getting ready and being told countless times that if I fell I would be fired before I hit the ground, zoom up that tree I went (We had a big Magnolia in our yard, my brother and I were pros). Here goes the funny part. The chain saw was an old beat up MacCulloch wrap rope and massive. I sent down the rope, Daddy would start it up at the ground and I would pull it to me. Every time I went to rev it to cut, it would just die. After about 5 times of trying this mayhem, I was told that I was the problem. "Do this not that, do that not this", and then came the name calling from everyone on the ground which I cannot repeat here. Finally, so frustrated, I said something like, "you come do it". However it came out like "why don't you take your fat #^% and get up here and do it"!  I then realized what I had said.
 
You all knew Windell Pope, and probably what he said to me after that comment, and I could see the way his jaw was clenching I was dead meat. All I knew was that I was not coming down from that tree to save my life, literally. So I did the next best thing, I tried again to start the saw myself and not send it down. I made some good cuts, did what I was told and the ground crew did their part. Then it was time to come down, first the saw, then the robes, then me. As I was coming down Daddy was at the base of the tree. My brother Ronnie was working hard but stopped to come over to the base as well. When I hit the ground Ronnie yelled "RUNNNN BUBBA RUNNNN!!! and he got in the way. By that time Daddy's friends were laughing so hard, that all was good, I thought! We were putting things away and I bent over to pick up a log and BAM! a foot to the butt. That's only part of the ass kickin' you're gonna git if you ever, ever cuss me again, you got it! Yes Sir, I got it! 
His buddies and my savior little brother were rollin' around with their belly laugh as I could barely sit down on the logs in the back of the truck. 

This man made me tough and steady to anything that came my way. I'll always look back on the lessons that he felt were important and realize that if not for those kick in the pants, many of life's problems might have been played differently. 

All I can say is "Thank you Windell Pope, for loving my Momma and the huge task you took on to raise hellions!
