Jack was a Jasper resident for over 60 years. He graduated from Walker High School, then left to attend Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he completed his law degree. In 1968 he married his one true love - Carmen Alphonso. Then Jack returned to Jasper in 1972 to begin his family, support his friends, and give back to his community. As a political figure in Jasper for decades, he is most remembered as a former Jasper mayor. He served as mayor from 1979–1984. Jack retired in 2000 as a judge for the Alabama State Surface Mining Commission. After retirement, he and Carmen relocated to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, returned to Jasper in 2017, and finally moved to the Alabama Gulf Coast after Carmen passed in 2019.
Jack was a lifelong learner and avid reader. He took an active role in supporting the Irma Dilg Nicholson Library at Walker College (now Bevill State Community College), the Carl Elliot Regional Library, and the Jasper Law Library. His family and friends will miss Jack’s infamous quick wit and hearty laugh. He meant so much to so many and he will be missed.
He is survived by his son Mitch Nicholson, daughter-in-law Hope, and grandson John Abner of Jasper, Alabama; his daughter Mary Ann Nicholson of Las Vegas, Nevada; his daughter Jeanne Nicholson; granddaughter Abby, and son-in-law Ryan Rhoades of Gulf Shores, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carmen; father, Dr. Francis Nicholson and mother Jean; and brother Tom Nicholson, all of Jasper, Alabama.
Graveside services will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery on Monday, April 24, 2023, at 10 a.m., directed by Kilgore-Green Funeral Home.
Family and friends are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Nicholson Family Scholarship Fund at Walker College Foundation (WCF). The WCF address is P.O. Box 2228, Jasper, AL 35502. www.wcfdn.org
