Mendy Irene Smitherman Mendy Irene Smitherman, 83, of Jasper, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015 at St.Vincents Hospital. Funeral services will be today, Oct. 13, 2015 at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Jasper with burial to follow at Walker Memory Gardens. Earnie Burfitt will officiate. Visitation will be today from 12 to 1 p.m. at the church. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Jasper. She worked at South Central Bell as an operator. Her grandchildren were the love of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sonda Smitherman; parents, William and Tempie Courington; sister, Jane Gibson Wilson; and brothers, J.B. Courington, Richard Courington, Everett Courington, Dewey Courington and Coleman Courington. She is survived by her daughter, DeeDee Newton (Rob); son, Chuck Hubbert; grandchildren, Chase Newton and Sydney Newton; sisters, Betty Jean Patton and Martha Fulton (Ronald); brothers, Al Courington and Jim Courington (Jane); sisters-in-law, Ellen Courington, Jackie Courington, Dean Courington and Dot Courington.
