Douglas, you were hands down the funniest guy I've ever known.   Not only known for your humor - you were honestly honest - more so than anyone I know.  Add a little dose of sweetness and a lot of generosity and that was you!  Doug, that beautiful oak bowl you made and sent to me, is such a treasure, even more so now.  I love having it in my home and how it makes me think of you.   I also will miss the rare occasion you'd catch me on facebook for a 5 minute chat.

It's always sad when the "really good guys" leave us too soon.....and your passing will leave a great hole in many.

Debby, Carol, Uncle Vern and Aunt Jackie, Karen, Tracey & Ron, Dean and Jacala - I am so sorry for your loss, and may the thought that others also grieve Doug's loss alongside you, be of some comfort.

I wish I could be there with you all this week, and even though I won't be, I will be in spirit.

I also loved seeing the photos contributed here.  Some I have seen on facebook pages, but others I have not seen.  I would like to have copies of them, but can't seem to save them from this photo slide show.  Carol, if you put them up, can I get them from you later on??

Debby and Carolyn,  Growing up I always enjoyed spending time at the Ryberg's. Doug was an amazing individual who always cared about everything and everyone. I will never forget the times I came over and Doug was always there to talk.  Please accept my condolences. He will be missed, never forgotten and always loved.

As both a neighbor and friend, Doug was always helping out and lending a hand   Doug was the first person we turned to in January when we had an emergency family illness. His ability to calm us and make decisions was greatly appreciated.  Doug's love for his wife and daughter was always first in his life.  We counted on always seeing your friendly  smile and wave as you drove by,on your way to the Hartford Fire Station.  You always gave back to your community and friends. We will miss you, Doug......rest in peace with our grateful thanks for all you did.

I really enjoyed talking to doug when he was around . I really liked having doug as my friend . I will miss doug . My prayers go out to Debra, Carolyn, Vernon, Jacqueline, & the rest of the ryberg family . May god be with you in this difficult time .

Firefighters they are a breed of their own. They work long days and sleep short nights. They go for hours sometimes days on end with only a precious little bit of sleep.

Yet they do their job well and voluntarily for free in most cases.

A firefighter can quit at any time, no one is there looking over our shoulder telling him he can't quit, but he wont quit in spite of that. And when you ask  him why, there is a pause and then an â€œI don't really knowâ€ or, â€œI can't really put my finger on itâ€. The only way I can describe it is a feeling deep in your gut that you can't ignore, something there telling you that this is what you are here to do.

A group may enter a department for no reason at all, just looking for something to do, but of that group one or two will get their first taste of fire and realize that this is in their heart, and they will do it until they are physically unable to.

Then there are those who grew up with firefighter dads and found something magical about the way he would go off Tuesday and come back Friday with a tired look on his face but with a certain gleam of pride in his eye that told you he loved what he was doing. Or when he'd go off in the middle of the night at the sound of his pager and come back later that day with that same gleam in his eye.  Despite utter exhaustion.

Some say that firemen are just thrill-seekers, looking for a quick rush. Others, those who have experienced them first hand say they are warriors. They come at a moments notice and seem to stare down at the fire; they trample on the dance floor of the devil wearing the boots of god.

These reasons are all merely speculations, nobody will ever know what makes a fireman a fireman, but one thing is for sure, the men who don't abuse the power respect others, and love the job for what it is. They are firemen night and day.

They are the true firemen of the world; they are the public servants and protectors of the innocent.  like Doug Ryberg

Such a giving and caring soul taken from us way too early.  Endless love and prayers to Debby, Carolyn and the entire Ryberg clan during this difficult time.  I will miss my cousin and his dose of humor.
