
He retired after more than 30 years with Western Electric, in Columbus, a member of U S MARINE CORP during the Korean Conflict, a member of Knights of Columbus, Hartford Volunteer Fireman, former Hartford Village Mayor and Councilman, 4 - H Advisor, 60 year member of both American Legion Post 254 and Bennington Grange, and a graduate of Etna High School Class of 1946.
John is survived by two sons; David (Erika) Wittman of Lancaster, Doug (Donna) Wittman of Centerburg, one daughter; Deanna (Mike) Fritsch of Mt. Vernon, 12 grandchildren, 9 great- grandchildren, two sisters; Ruth Krumm, Vera Hobbs and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years; Mary E. (Chalfant), two brothers; Robert and Bill Wittman, three sisters; Mary Wittman, Margaret Suver and Ann Wittman.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at The Church of The Ascension, 555 S. Main St., in Johnstown. American Legion Post 254 will conduct Military Rites following Mass at the church. Calling hours will be at the Crouse-Kauber-Sammons Funeral Home, 225 North Main Street, in Johnstown, on Friday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 254 or to the church. There will be an online memorial at www.cksammons.com.
