Robert Fletcher Smith died on September 8, 2015 with his beloved wife, Elaine, and sons, Eric and Kurt by his side. Bob was born May 10, 1926, in Syracuse, New York, a son to the late Fletcher R. and Leona M. Smith. He was a Boy Scout, in which he proudly earned the top rank of Eagle Scout with three palms.
He earned his B.A. degree from Syracuse University in 1950, where he was a member of the Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity. Bob continued his studies at Texas College of Arts and Industry, Wayne State University and the University of Delaware. He became a Chaplain’s Assistant in the United States Navy during World War II. Following his military service he resumed academic work and graduated from Colgate Rochester Divinity School with a Masters of Divinity. He was ordained by the American Baptist Churches of the USA in 1952. He also attended Garrett and McCormick Theological Seminary.
In what would become a 65 year partnership, Bob married Jennie Elaine Nissen on August 19, 1950. They established their ministry as well as their family and especially enjoyed their time at the family cottage “Quiet Cedars” on Lake Champlain. Their ministry included pastoring the United Church of Pittsford (NY); First Baptist Church of Watertown (NY); Jefferson Avenue Baptist Church (Detroit, MI); and Second Baptist Church (Wilmington, DE).
35 years ago, Bob suffered a debilitating stroke that left him with many physical challenges. Thanks to Elaine’s devotion, Bob was able to enjoy many years of family, church and social activities. He was an example to those who knew him as he rose above his disability and made the best of life. He dearly loved his 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and enjoyed fun times with his family. Bob was always quick with a joke or a slightly embellished story.
Bob was an active community member, keen wordsmith, and prolific writer. He was a faithful, fifty-year member of Rotary International and a Paul Harris Fellow. He contributed and had published many articles and sermons in professional magazines, and in 1994, his book, “Exploring Inner Space” was published.
Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Harry, and granddaughters; Meryl Elaine and Gina Christine. He is survived by his loving wife, Elaine; devoted sons Eric (Susan Syria) Smith and Kurt (LaDonna) Smith; grandsons, Scott (Sophia), Andrew (Jenna), Jordan and Adam; great grandsons Landon, Noah, and Liam; and great granddaughter Riley.
