Mr. Myles Murl Nelson was born October 24, 1925 in Grand Ridge, Florida and passed away August 4, 2015 in Tucker, Georgia at the age of 89. .In high school, Murl was scouted seriously by the St. Louis Cardinals. But before he could go on to play pro baseball, he joined up to serve in World War II. Murl proudly served in the Marine Corps, fighting in important battles at Okinawa and serving in China. He and his unit were awarded a prestigious award for their part in the battle of Sugar Loaf Hill on Okinawa. He came home after the war to marry Martha Lane, and start a family in Atlanta.
Over the years he worked in the construction industry, eventually building up his own company in the grading and hauling business. It became one of the largest grading companies in the state, doing the grading for many of the MARTA stations in Atlanta and other large regional projects. For fun he and Martha loved fishing, and he built his own lake so he could do more of it. They raised two daughters, and helped bring up his four grandchildren.
As much as he loved fishing, sports and his wonderful daughters and grandchildren, the real love of his life was Martha, his wife of almost 60 years. Together they were a great team, raising children and grandchildren, teaching them how to fish, how to shag flies in the outfield and hit doubles on the softball and baseball fields, and how to shoot hoops. He was “the hero” of his children, grandchildren, and wife. He will be missed terribly by his family and everyone who knew him.He is preceded in death by his wife Martha Nelson; parents, Henry E. Nelson Sr and Maude Nelson; and brother, Gene Nelson. He leaves to cherish his precious memories daughters, Deborah Stall and Diane Noriega; grandchildren, Daniel Noriega, Zachary Stall, Maggie Stall and Sam Stall; brother, Eddie Nelson and sister, Alice Hatfield. Visitation will be held Saturday August 8th at 10am. Funeral service will begin Saturday August 8th at 11am at Tara Garden Chapel in Jonesboro, Georgia. Burial will be at Sherwood Memorial Park in Jonesboro, Georgia.
