Patricia Ann Chevis-Gray

Patricia “Pat” Chevis - Gray was born January 11, 1942 in Opelousas, LA to Merla Mae and Austin Chevis. She was the oldest of three (3) children from that union. Pat attended Our Mother of Mercy Catholic School and Blessed Sacrament High School through the 11th grade. She went on to complete her high school education at Hebert High School in Beaumont, TX. Pat continued her education at Chenier Business School in Beaumont, TX.

Pat relocated to Houston where she was employed at Kroger for several years. She returned to Beaumont where she found her calling as the Main Receptionist and Switch Board Operator at the Jefferson County Courthouse.

In 1968 her late son, Kenneth “Kenny” Lee Sampson was born. In 1977, she welcomed her daughter, Adrienne Ann Griffin-Thomas. Pat loved motherhood and always dreamed of having children which were the absolute joy of her life.

Never one to bite her tongue, Pat was passionate about local and state politics. She participated in several political organizations and volunteered for many campaigns. She was one-of-a-kind and lead an action-filled life overflowing with tales of her many travels and driven by the love of her children Kenny and Adrienne . Most of all she loved bragging about the many accomplishments of her grand-daughter Taylor Noel.

Pat was preceded in death by her son Kenny, father, Austin Chevis, mother, Merla Mae Chevis-Simon and step-father, Joseph Simon. Left to cherish her memory, are daughter Adrienne and grand-daughter Taylor Noel along with her sister and brother, Delores Chevis-Christopher and Charles Anthony Chevis (Delores). She is loved by many, especially her niece, Joy Williams (Kevin), nephew, Charles Austin Chevis (Rhonda), great nephews, Kevin “KJ”, Justice, Aiden, Chase and Cruz, in addition to a host of cousins, extended family and friends that Pat considered family.

Due to the pandemic, a celebration of life will be held at a later date and time.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in her memory.
