Bea was a wonderful, strong woman that was very much loved and cherished. She is greatly missed and her memory will always be treasured. "Nana" was what she liked to be called by her grandchildren, while "Honey" was the name used by her loving and devoted husband of 67 years. She was an amazing wife, mom, daughter, sister and Nana.
Bea's story starts on August 15, 1931 in Rutland VT, born to Alvin and Lillian Reed. She attended Bellows Falls High School in Vermont, where she was head cheerleader and graduated in 1950. She met the love of her life Eugene (Gene) Short in 1949. They were later married in 1953. In 1956, their son David was born and in 1959 they welcomed their son Brian. Bea worked as a telephone operator in Bellows Falls VT and Portsmouth NH, and as a greeter at the Rockingham Hotel, currently known as the Library Restaurant in downtown Portsmouth NH. In 1968, Bea and Gene started a pool company, Custom Pools, which is still going strong today as a 3rd generation company. Bea was the bookkeeper and was well respected by the employees, vendors and customers. In 1996, they retired when "it wasn't fun anymore" and they handed the reigns over to their sons David and Brian.
Bea loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren, they were her heart and joy. Time spent at Nana's house was very special, she loved them and they loved her.
Bea loved to travel and loved to go to exotic places like India, China and Europe, sometimes bringing her grandchildren. She also loved to garden, take walks on the beach, go out to eat, have a glass or two of wine (don’t forget the ice!), and knit when she found the time. She always stayed busy. Bea was a people person; she had many great friends, including Pam and LaRue. The girls loved to go places that included fund raisers for the Salvation Army.
Loved ones that cleared the path for Bea are her parents, Alvin and Lillian Reed, her son David Short, her grandson Alexander Short, her infant great- granddaughter Kayla Short Philbrook, and her brother William Reed. Loved ones that will miss Bea until they meet again are her husband, Gene, son and daughter- in- law Brian and Mary Ann Short, her grandchildren Danielle Short, Darrel Short and his wife Lauren, Nicholas Short, Ryanne Bianchi and her husband Tory, Kelsey Adams and her husband Matthew, her great- grandchildren, Corin Short, Nathan Short Conley, Logan Short, Madelyn Bianchi, Jackson Bianchi, Benjamin Adams, Leila Adams, Zachary Short, Aidan Short, Madison Short, her sisters Rita Hinds, Carol Hughes , Sylvia Mosse, brother Paul Reed and her fur baby Cutie.
The family would like to thank Dr. Drouer, Dr. Reich, and the Trustbridge Hospice team for all the loving care they provided.
