Joseph Edward Miller, Jr.—beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend—passed away on February 7, 2026, at Jupiter Medical Center, Florida. He leaves behind a legacy defined by exceptional intellect, athletic excellence, professional achievement, boundless generosity, and above all, an unwavering devotion to the people he loved.
Born in Webster, New York, Joe embodied the very ideal of the scholar-athlete from the earliest days of his childhood. A spelling bee champion whose curiosity was matched only by his competitive spirit, he earned a full scholarship to McQuaid Jesuit High School, where his brilliance and discipline quickly became evident. Joe excelled in every arena he entered—academic, athletic, and personal. A three-sport star in baseball, basketball, and football, he was honored with McQuaid’s Knight of the Year award before becoming one of the inaugural inductees into the McQuaid Hall of Fame in 2007. Those who knew him understood that Joe’s accomplishments were not merely the result of talent, but of an extraordinary work ethic and a sincere joy for learning and striving.
Joe continued his academic and athletic journey at LeMoyne College, earning his Bachelor of Arts in Economics degree while attracting the attention of Major League Baseball. Drafted by the Kansas City Royals, he made the deliberate and deeply characteristic decision to pursue further education, choosing a life of long-term purpose and familial commitment. Joe went on to earn his Master of Business Administration from the University at Buffalo, graduating first in his class—an achievement that reflected not only his formidable intellect, but also his unwavering discipline and relentless drive.
His professional life began at Xerox Corporation, where he was quickly recognized as one of the youngest individuals ever promoted to Area Sales Manager. After five successful years with Xerox, Joe left to join brothers Keith and Bruce Ashby as a partner at S&W X-Ray, a premier medical diagnostic imaging company in the Northeast. For two decades he was a dedicated partner in building and strengthening the business until its eventual sale. Throughout his career, Joe led with vision, integrity, and a profound respect for colleagues and partners alike.
But perhaps Joe’s most enduring contributions were those shaped by his philanthropic heart. His generosity was expansive— among his proudest endeavors was his role as co-founder and benefactor of a children’s program at the YMCA in Syracuse, New York. Joe’s philanthropic support extended to organizations nationwide, including Judy’s House, McQuaid Jesuit High School, and Jupiter Medical Center. His kindness flowed effortlessly to family, friends, co-workers, communities, and institutions, leaving an imprint as grand as his brilliant smile that will live on in immeasurable ways.
Joe’s passion for athletics followed him throughout his life, not as a mere pastime but as a reflection of his deepest values. An ardent runner, devoted fitness enthusiast, and true lover of the game of baseball, Joe found joy wherever competition met camaraderie. On the golf courses of Jonathan’s Landing and Elk River, he forged friendships, with a passion for movement paralleling his passion for life—steady, purposeful, exuberant.
Yet all of Joe’s achievements, honors, and passions pale beside the devotion he held for his family. To them, he was a leader, a protector, a teacher, and a source of endless love. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Kathy Eileen Miller. He leaves his children, Joseph Edward Miller III (Laura) and Jennifer Miller Barcza (Erik), who carry forward his strength, integrity, intelligence, humor, and warmth. Joe’s greatest pride and joy were his grandchildren—Grace, Avery, Graham, Anderson, Katelyn, and Alexander—each of whom knew, without question, the depth of papa’s love and the supreme delight he found in their every accomplishment.
Joe is also survived by brother Mark Miller (Kathy); sister Mary Beth Horan (Jim); sisters-in-law Judith Matte and Lauren Somma; and a wide circle of extended family and dear friends who were enriched by his presence. He is preceded in death by parents, Joseph Edward Miller and Margaret Miller, and by younger brother, Thomas Miller.
To say Joe lived a full life would be an understatement. He lived an extraordinary one—rooted in principle, lifted by passion, and guided by love. He brought thoughtfulness to his work, joy to his play, generosity to his community, and a steadfast gentleness to his family. His legacy is not only written in records and accolades, but in the hearts of all those who were privileged to know him.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, followed by a Celebration of Joe’s Life at Jonathan’s Landing Club.
