Paul Pinkus departed on his final journey on June 6th. He taught us what it meant to be a husband, father, grandfather, son and brother; making family togetherness and joy the highest priorities. He danced, celebrated, and enjoyed wonderful family meals and lived every moment of life to the fullest.
Paul grew up in a simple non-religious Jewish family as part of a large extended family that didn't have much besides laughter. His beloved mother was a dignified positive woman who always put her children’s and grandchildren’s needs before her own. Paul tragically lost his dad at a very young age. After the loss his mom had to rely on the support of family while she got back on her feet raising 3 kids and even buying a house on a waitress's salary. Paul loved and cared for his mom and his two little sisters Nancy and Barbara.
As a teen, Paul spent lots of time with friends on the boardwalk of Atlantic City. He didn't prioritize education for himself but good luck keeping up with him on a crossword puzzle. He had a great vocabulary which helped make him an amazing story teller.
At age 19, he was drafted during the Korean War. He was eventually sent to France near Bordeaux where he participated in the Marshall Plan. Paul’s love of France and travel took hold. Something he enjoyed for the rest of his life.
After the army, he met his first wife, Muriel and they raised 4 kids together. Joel, David, Wendy and Michael. He reinvented himself professionally time and time again, and along the way moved the family from Margate, NJ to Dallas. He and his family had many adventures and laughs, usually traveling to visit family on both coasts. Family life was filled with long family car trips and week-long projects around the house. Each of these construction and restoration projects were tackled with Paul’s analytical planning skills, no Google, no internet no YouTube but always with lots of sweat and laughs.
In the 1990s Paul lost his beloved mother and then his wife of nearly 40 years. About a year later Paul allowed himself to dance once more, this time with a blonde; and Bette and Paul didn't stop dancing until the end. Bette accorded her beloved husband a second Act featuring love, travel and happiness and Paul provided her the truest of love and the opportunity to be a grandmother.
Paul is survived by his wife, Bette; sisters, Nancy and Barbara; children, Joel, David, Wendy and Michael; grandchildren, Isaac, Ben, Connor, Alec, Sean, Eric, Jonny and Emma; son-in-law, Jason and daughters-in-law, Kyna and Julia who are all so grateful to have had the good fortune to know him either as a husband, brother, father, grandfather, role model and inspiration.
