It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Stefano F. “Steve” Gelardi, a devoted husband, stepfather, grandfather, friend, and proud retired Captain of the New Jersey State Police, who passed away peacefully on September 6th, 2025, at the age of 81.
Steve was born on July 24th, 1944 in Somerville, New Jersey. He was a man of honor, integrity, and unwavering commitment to service. Steve graduated in 1968 with the 75th class of the New Jersey State Police Academy, dedicating 27 years of service. Steve served with distinction, rising through the ranks as captain and was assigned as a detective to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. His dedication left a lasting impact on the communities he served and on the colleagues who were fortunate enough to work alongside him. Upon his retirement, he was especially proud of ending his time as the Chief Executive of Investigations for the Department of Gaming Enforcement.
Beyond the badge, Steve was first and foremost a family man. He is survived by his wife Patricia Hughes-Gelardi, children: Robert (Melissa) Hughes, Jeffrey (Kelly) Hughes, Kathryn (Jeffrey) Kushner and his cherished grandchildren: Lea, Lauren, Bobby, Megan, J.T., Ashley, K.J., and Keith who lovingly knew him as "Pop Pop.” His generosity and humor did not go unnoticed. During the holidays and family gatherings, his grandchildren loved to play his money game and listen to his jokes. His gentle humor, and steady presence will be deeply missed at every family gathering, and holidays.
Steve was known not just for his professional accomplishments but for the way he lived his life with humility and loyalty. Steve loved to play golf. In the spring and summer months you could find him at Manufacturers’ Golf & Country Club, where he was a member for 30 years. PGA National in West Palm Beach, Florida is where he lived and played during the winter months. While at PGA, he served as Chairman of the Advisory Board of Governors. To him, golf was more than sport, and his country clubs more than a place, it was where he felt a sense of belonging and where his greatest friendships were formed.
Steve will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, and his memory will be cherished always. His family takes comfort in knowing that he is at peace.
