
Anthony “Tony” Almasin of Haiku, Maui passed away peacefully on January 19th, 2026. He was born on January 5 1947, in Pauwela, Maui, attended Haiku Elementary, Maui High School Class of ’65, UH Maui College & American Institute of Banking. He was active with the Haiku Cub Scouts and Haiku Boys Scout. An avid surfer with the Haiku Boys Surf Club and started the “The Sapphires” Rock & Roll Band during High School days with Evan Asato (d), Jerry Freitas and Tommy Fevella (d), winning the 1964 Maui Battle of the Bands and participated in the 1964 State Battle of the Bands at the former Honolulu International Center.
Tony was initially drafted into Military Service, then volunteered for a supporting role in Army Finance Corp and duty Station, Germany. While in Army Basic Training, he qualified and was recruited for Officer Candidate School, Ranger Training and 6th Army Band as he completed 2 years of High School Band, playing and reading Alto Saxophone and Clarinet sheet music. After Basic Training, Army Admin and Finance School, Tony Spent 21-months in Karlsruhe, Germany as an Accounting Specialist, keypunching for loading into the Army’s new Field Data Computer System, Supply Records Management and Supply Depot audits. Tony was then sent to Cholon, Vietnam as a Finance Specialist. Here he met his future wife, the former A-Nu Dang. As their relationship grew, Tony Reenlisted after his first term ended, married A-Nu and together they had their firstborn son, Robert, recognized as an American Citizen, born abroad. All three returned to Maui in April 1971. Tony completed 6-years of military service, leaving as a Staff Sergeant, separating Honorably with the following Awards: Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct, National Defense, Vietnam Campaign, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and Vietnam Service Medal.
Upon returning to Maui, Tony went back to School under the GI Bill and was gainfully employed with Bank of Hawaii for nearly 28 years, in Supervisory, Business Loan Officer and eventually Branch Management. Over the years, Tony served Maui as Treasurer for the Maui Democratic Party & Paia Main Street Association, Director with Maui Jaycees, Distinguished Club President with Kiwanis Club of Kahului, Buyer for the Maui 4-H Livestock Association.
He was predeceased in death by his parents Frank & Roberta, sisters Rose Yamamoto-Honokaupu and Frances Coelho-Oshiro (Reynard). Survived by brothers, Dan (BJ), Ben and sister Vicky Jennings. He is also survived by his wife now known as Lynne of 54-years, sons Robert (Estee), Duane (Grace) and Michael (Chy), grandchildren Valerie, Amelia, and Sophia.
A funeral service will be held at Ballard Family Mortuary-Kahului, located at 440 Ala Makani St, Kahului, HI, 96732, United States. The service is scheduled for February 14, 2026, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am; with service to begin at 11:00 am.
