Emile W. Wery, 1st SGT, US Army (RET), 78, of Pahoa, died February 11, 2023 peacefully at home surrounded by his sons and family. Born in Honolulu, he attended St. Louis School in Kaimuki. A lifelong researcher and expert in Hawaiian Genealogy, he spent his retirement years dedicated to Veterans Affairs as Senior Commander, VFW- Hilo Post 2875; President of Korean War Veterans-Hilo; Senior Commander of the Combat Infantrymen’s Association- Hilo; Commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart- Hawaii Island. First Sergeant Wery was a recipient of the Combat Infantrymen’s Badge and the Purple Heart (Vietnam) as well as numerous other military decorations.
He is survived by brother, William; sister, Yolanda; sons, Michael and Marcus; and a large ‘ohana of beloved cousins.
Service to be held on Friday, March 31, 2023, 8:30 a.m. at East Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2, 110 Laimana Ave, Hilo. Donations in his name can be made to The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3875 at PO BOX 4582, Hilo, HI 96720.
