Howard “Pops” Ernest Furtado Sr., 79 of Pukalani, lost his battle with cancer and passed away on January 19, 2013 at Maui Memorial Medical Center. He was born on July 31, 1933 in Honolulu. He grew up in Kapahulu and worked at Costa’s Dairy in Kulioulu. He then became a General Contractor for 30 years. He moved to Maui in 1978 and lived his passion for car racing (Papa’s Toy). He became an honorary life-time member at Maui Raceway Park. He enjoyed working on his classic cars, especially his 1937 Ford pickup which he loved cruising in with the Maui Classic Car Cruzers.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, January 25, 2013 at Ballard Family Mortuary, prayer service will begin at 7 p.m., and cremation will follow.
Howard is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jacqueline J. Furtado; daughter, Barbara (Mel) McCullough; sons, Howard Furtado Jr., and Craig (Johanna) Furtado; brother, Ben (Carol) Furtado; grandchildren, Dominic McCormack, Timothy McCormack, Jennifer Gillbank, Nani Bustamanti, Howard Furtado III, Chelcy Furtado, Ryan Furtado, and 13 great-grandchildren.
