

Joe started his Electrical career with Lahaina Light. He worked as a linesman with Maui Electricand later moved to the island of Lanai to become the station manager. He’d spend many yearson Lanai, making many dear friends. Joe spent several years as a Tennis Coach and Little LeagueBaseball Coach. From time to time you’d find him helping out at Richard’s Shopping Center.When Joe retired from MECO in 2000, he moved back to his hometown.
His love for the game of golf led him to many friendships. You’d always find him hitting golfballs or playing a game with his golf buddies, whether it be at Cavendish Golf Course on Lanai,Kaanapali Golf Course or at Waiehu Municipal Golf Course.
After retirement, you’d find him hanging out and talking stories with whoever in Lahaina Townor at Mala Wharf and you’d always find him with his furry companion, Haupia. His spunky, butKolohe personality left everyone with an everlasting impression.
Joe passed suddenly in the wake of the devastating Lahaina Fire in August 2023.
He is preceded in death by his parents Maximo & Antonia Lara; his siblings: 2 brothers (Silverio“Bediong” Lara & Gary Lara) and 3 sisters (Agnes Ramos, Anna Ramos & Florence Makekau). Heis also preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Judy Lara.
He is survived by his 4 children: Tim (Carolyn) Laborte, Tammy (Andy) Pescado, Kiha (Kili) Kaina& Misty Lara. He has 14 Grandchildren & 11 Great-Grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held over ashes with Viewing beginning at 9:00AM. Followed byServices at 11:00AM on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Ballard’s Mortuary.
