It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Shimodaira (nee Yasui) on February 14, 2026. She was a resilient and kindhearted person who will be dearly missed by her family.
Mary was born on July 12, 1931, in Eburne (Marpole), BC and was the second of five children. During WWII, she and her family were relocated to an Internment Camp in New Denver where she grew up. After the war, she moved to Kamloops, BC for school and work. In 1955, she married John Shimodaira and had four children. Over the years, she balanced her life with her work as a bookkeeper and raising her children. Throughout her life, Mary’s house was a gathering place for her family, friends, and children’s friends.
Mary enjoyed knitting, cooking, baking, entertaining company, and trips to Hawaii. She loved her two granddaughters dearly and in her later years was delighted to spend time with her two great grandchildren. She was fortunate to spend her later years at home with family where she enjoyed her TV programs and reading. Mary was an incredible woman who held an optimistic outlook on life and was tenacious in all she did. She leaves behind a legacy of love and generosity.
Mary is survived by her four children, Ross (Pam), Val, Cheryl, and Leanne (Ray), her two granddaughters, Samantha (Tommy) and Kelsey (Ches), and beloved great grandchildren, Nora and Russell. Mary is also survived by her two sisters, Kaz (Stan) and Marie (Norio), and many nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her husband, John, and her siblings, Kay and Roy.
