Born January 1928 in Chicago, Illinois, George lived a life defined by quiet strength, and devotion—to his country, and the people he loved. He was a United States Navy Veteran serving honorably from 1946 to 1947 and from 1950 to 1958. During his first enlistment, George participated in Operation Crossroads, witnessing the historic Able and Baker nuclear tests. He was recognized as an Atomic Veteran. George served as Lithographer Second Class (LI2) during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, in recognition of his participation in combat operations.
Between enlistments, George worked as a freight router for the Railway Express Agency in Chicago. Following his military career, George became a compositor for the Pacific Stars and Stripes newspaper in Tokyo, Japan. Upon retiring George moved his family from Japan to Hawaiʻi.
George is survived by his wife Kay; sons John (Yvonne) and Joe (Momi); grandsons Jake, Jim and Jared; granddaughter Tahina; and six great-grandchildren who will carry forward his legacy of kindness, and quiet strength. George treasured his family deeply.
Fair Winds and Following Seas, George. May you rest in eternal peace.
A private memorial service honoring George's life of service, devotion and love will be held on July 15, 2025, at Hawaii Memorial Park with committal service at Hawai‘i State Veterans Cemetery.
