Grace Yoshino Kaneshige Teruya was born on July 7, 1928, in Honolulu to Masao and Katsumi Kaneshige. She was the third of five children—two sons and three daughters. She graduated from McKinley High School in 1946 and continued her education at Cannon’s School of Business, preparing herself for a life defined by dedication and quiet strength.
While working at Durant Irvine Co., Grace met the love of her life, Stanley Teruya. They married on July 8, 1950, and their marriage lasted 59 years until Stan’s passing in January 2020. They raised three children—Stephanie, Dustin, and Lisa—and made their home in Kailua. She worked at Kuakini Medical Center until she retired.
Grace touched the lives of those around her in countless meaningful ways. She was thoughtful, dependable, and endlessly generous with her time and talents. She remembered the details that made people feel valued. She offered support without hesitation. She created a sense of comfort and belonging simply by being herself. Her presence had a way of making others feel at ease.
A woman of many talents, Grace loved to cook and bake, filling her home with warmth and the familiar scents of family favorites. She was also remarkably creative and active throughout her life. Her hobbies included painting, knitting, crocheting, Hawaiian quilting, and lei making—each craft reflecting her patience and her love of beauty. She enjoyed line dancing and remained committed to staying active, even participating in aerobics classes well into her 90s.
Grace’s steady, loving presence will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She is survived by daughters Stephanie and Lisa, son Dustin, and grandchildren Kyle, DJ, and Roselee. Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the friendships she nurtured, and the countless lives she touched with her kindness and grace.
