Can it be a year has passed since this huge impossible loss!!!!  Well, gives me a chance to remember down the years.  Re-commemorate all the amazing legacy of the ALL he did.

My doctor at TAMC while I was in intensive care from Nov 1986 to Apr 1987. He assigned his best, Dr Shaver as my caring physician. He looked in on me daily, even his youngest son sent me well wishes. There were times that it didn’t look as if I would make it, but Dr Barcia kept me going. I last saw Dr Barcia at the Jacksonville Florida airport. He headed to Alabama. Being the doctor he was. He had to pull my shirt up in public and examine my stomach(20 years later).my condolences to the Barcia family. I will truly miss him and his Christmas letters. I know God has a new angel.

As an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery resident at Tripler Army Medical Center in the 1980s I looked forward to my General Surgery rotation. As a Vietnam vet I looked forward to learning my new discipline under a fellow combat veteran. I was not disappointed. Dr. Pete Barcia  was an exceptional mentor and exemplar of a Soldier/Doctor for me. I remember being so intimidated while preparing for my first solo general surgery procedure....a simple hernia repair to be done under the direct supervision of the Chief. I burned much midnight oil committing to memory the different tissue layers, surgical steps and anatomy involved in the procedure and it was with great trepidation that I entered the Operating Room on the appointed day. Pete immediately put me at ease and we quickly accomplished the surgery in an exemplary manner. His compliments on my competence and accomplishment were beyond valuable to me. His positive reinforcement, professionalism and encouragement were exactly what this nervous, non-general surgery resident needed that day and for the remainder of my residency at Tripler. He always made himself available to talk about surgical patients and was an outstanding consultant for me. I learned an incredible amount of information about trauma and the surgical management of really sick patients under his watchful tutorship. I also learned how to communicate both good and horribly bad news to patients in a caring empathetic way from him. I think of the good Dr. Barcia often and he has always been a reminder of exactly how a great doctor should treat his patients, both professionally and as a fellow human. News of his passing leaves me with a void but it is a positivity filled with warmth and benevolence. Godspeed Chief!

Dr. Barcia was a great mentor, surgeon and human being! He went above and beyond in caring about his residents, staff and patients. I have been practicing for 32 years and still quote Dr. Barcia frequently! He was the kind of guiding light that we will always need in surgery and in life. Beth and I send our deepest sympathies and prayers to Julie and the entire family. Dr. Barcia will live on in all those lives that he so greatly influenced.

You are missed. There is a giant hole in our hearts since you left.  

You’ll forever be remembered and your story (and your stories) will live on. I am fortunate to have walked the path with you, to have shared so much in common with you and to have been blessed with so many years in your company.  I carry your name. People tell me that I look like you did when you were my age. I share your love of growing things, of fixing things, of accomplishing projects. You and I fished many waters together and have had many adventures together. Though you never pushed me one way or another, we wore the same uniform, got the same degrees, and said the same oaths.  I’ve been a doctor for 15 years and I sometimes I still look over my shoulder when someone says “Dr. Barcia” thinking that they must be talking to you. I guess that’s what it means to be ‘cut from the same cloth’ as someone and I can’t think of a better person to be compared to.

It is an honor to be your son. It’s a blessing to have had you as a father.

Pete Barcia was one of the “GREATEST OF ALL TIME.” A prominent mentor, teacher, father, and friend. We have been friends with Pete and his family for 60+ years, sharing many memorable experiences from Tripler Army Medical Center to Salmon fishing in Kenai, Alaska, and catching Snapper in the Florida Keys. We can only hope that he and Tom are “hooked up” with a big one in some ocean and having the time of their lives. Pete will be greatly missed, but he will always live on in the memories we share. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time, and may they find peace and serenity in knowing that Pete affected so many lives through his compassion for life and the outdoors.

My favorite, to this day, is the bear encounter he had while camping with his wife. He would bring in his photo albums of trips to Alaska and Italy for us to look at. I can only imagine how many photo albums he has put together. He was very giving, he would always share salmon (caught in Alaska), his fresh baked bread, and mangos from his tree. I looked forward to those mangos ever summer. I still have no desire to run a marathon, but if I ever do I still have a cooy of the Barcia method. Dr Barcia accomplished so much in life and was an inspiration to many. In a way I felt he would live forever and was shock/sad to hear of his passing. My deepest condolences to his family (and friends). I heard a lot about you folks and in a way feel like I know you. Mahalo Dr Barcia for everything, rest in peace, aloha nō.

Dad- Peter Joseph Barcia
 My dad carried my name within his name. My adamant voice, declaring that I am nothing like my dad,  was gradually proven to be untrue. Being the sixth child I was raised also by my older siblings, and not just by my parents. Connection with my dad was erratic, and then largely severed during my adolescence. My friends, surfing, and intoxicants, were my comforts and my way during this time. My dad, and what he stood for, was completely opposite from these loves of mine. Hence, we clashed, and I reveled in the separation.. forced drug treatments in sued that resulted in a loss of normal teenager activities like attending my senior year of high school, prom, etc. This change of environment, and introduction to a new way of living encouraged me to expand my horizons.. been newly clean and sober, I first tolerated my dad, then slowly recognized good and bad points of his personality, then, years later, when I tired of punishing him, and became tired of being a victim in my story, I opened up to loving him. My relationship with my dad appeared static at times, but it never was, and never will be. He lives in me now, and I know he has an angel and guide watching over from the world of the unseen. during the year of his illness, I was able to visit him many times. Were there deep insightful conversations between us? Not so much. There was an ample amount of time sitting in his presence, and being completely present for this. What a gift to have this slow goodbye. He came to me after his passing to let me know he was nearby and I’m guessing to comfort us. My dad was a large energy. He could be imposing and scary. He was also a groundbreaker and set the tone for success in the areas of work, personal development, and family. I love you, dad! 


We were devastated by the news of Peter's passing and offer our deepest condolences to Julie and the entire Barcia family. Pete was such a unique person, a man for all seasons who seemingly could do almost anything he set his mind to. I first met Pete in 1975 as a new intern and surgical resident at Tripler Army Medical Center, first when he was one of the teaching staff and then later when he became the General Surgery Residency program director and Chief of Surgery. He had a major influence on my career as a surgeon and I remember, with mostly fondness, the many many hours we spent together in the OR over 3 decades. It was often very challenging and difficult and he taught me a lot, not only about medicine and surgery, but also about life and the way one should live it. He had a lot of one liners, short in length but powerful in meaning and importance. The last year of my residency, my father died. As I look back I realize that in many ways Pete became like a second father to me. He had a major influence on the path my life took. After I graduated, I had several  postings around the world. While I was in Germany, Pete called me up out of the blue and asked me to return to Tripler to be part of his teaching staff. I was elated and immediately said yes.  We worked together for the next 25 years. The last 10 years we shared the same office room with our desks only several feet apart. I got to hear many of Pete's amazing stories. I will miss you dearly my friend. I hope to see you again one day. May God bless and keep you.

Peter impacted so many over his long and accomplished life. I was lucky to marry into his beautiful family in 1992, and he was a father- in- law who exemplified commitment to family and hard work. There are people in life who make a meaningful  impact on those around them, and Peter did just that in a variety of ways. I especially appreciate his strong example of dedication, ambition and achievement, moral character, athleticism, innovative thinking, healthy habits, his curiosity and desire to keep learning and improving, his pride in family and his charismatic story telling. These admirable traits, along with his green thumb, delicious baked goods and astounding fishing skills, have left their mark on our family.  We have been blessed; I have been blessed. Thank you to Peter, Julie and the rest of the family, for accepting me as a Barcia. I will miss him deeply. All of my gratitude and love - Celeste, daughter-in-law

Hardest thing in the world to write memorials about such a unique, larger than life, person we had the luck to have had in our lives.  Harder still to be so far away and unable to be present in Hawaii Friday with all the family and friends honoring Peter. From New York, then, sending love and hugs and prayers and gratitude always to have known Peter and the amazing life he led and shared so generously. Mahalo. 

I am so lucky and grateful to  been loved by my Poppa for the last 27 years. My childhood was blessed with many special memories with him. 
I will always remember fishing from the Kenai river and Poppa helping me reel in a big King salmon, encouraging me, "You can do it! Keep reeling girl, don’t give up!" 
I remember being a little girl invited to run the swamp romp with Poppa's team. Surrounded by big military men as we trudged through the mud. Poppa helped me over the obstacles and in his firm yet loving way, reminded me that girls can do anything.
Poppa, your long life has inspired so many.  You have instilled family traditions that we will always keep. You passed on your love for gardening, cooking, baking, documenting memories through photos, experiencing other cultures through travel. You've showed me what a beautiful and dedicated marriage looks like and always managed to squeeze "The best thing I did was marry my bride" into any and every conversation.

Pete Barcia was a wonderful colleague when I was on active duty with the US Army at Tripler Army Medical Center. Pete was an exemplary physician and teacher of medical students and young physicians. He was a wonderful father of his many children, some of whom became physicians.  I, and many who knew him, will long remember Peter Barcia, MD, Colonel US Army (Retired).

Eugene and I discussed the fact that the fishing expedition was memorable but spending time with Peter and Julie was a special blessing that will always be a part of us.

I am Dr. Bernard Robinson. I had the joy of working with Peter when he was chief of surgery and I was chief of neurosurgery.  We both continued to work at Tripler as retired military civilian physicians.  I was finally able to find time to accept Pete's invitation to spend a week fishing at his and Julie's home in Alaska.  My brother, Eugene, and I enjoyed some of the most memorable moments of our lives as we were sincerely welcomed as part of the annual Pete & Julie Barcia "family and friends gathering" at their home on the Kenai River in mid July 2018.  

Dear Julie and family, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I, along with my husband Chuck Miller, were stationed at Tripler while Pete was there.  We have fond  memories of the many races and Honolulu marathons we participated with him and the children.   After we all retired, it was always great to see Pete and Julie at the O2M3 yearly events.  He served his country and community well.  RIP COL Barcia

My dad always seemed like Superman to me. Every night he would tell stories about the people he helped fix via surgery.  You could hear how much he cared for the patients.  I grew up determined to be a doctor so I could be just like him.
He truly seemed that he could do anything & everything. 
He got us all into running after joyously completing his first marathon. He continued to train for and run marathons & triathlons for many years. This inspired me to join in doing marathons, triathlons, and even an Ironman. I am so appreciative for the gift of enjoying fitness.
He had all us kids growing vegetables for practical reasons (and since he couldn’t have a chicken farm in his backyard!) He continued to garden throughout his life & shared so much of his harvests with his family and neighbors, teaching me lessons of growing but more importantly, caring for others  through sharing. 
His self-taught love of baking that perfect loaf of bread was a similar lesson.
He truly left a legacy of love, to my Mom especially, but also to all who knew him. He was the ultimate example of living life to the fullest. I will miss his stories and humor so much. I am so grateful for all his love & inspiration. ❤️

My deepest sympathies to you on the passing of Peter Barcia. He was friendly, generous and had a keen mind. Peter lived life to its fullest and maintained a close and loving relationship with family and friends. I will always remember how as a 10 year old at the 1979 Honolulu Marathon, my first marathon, I hit the wall at the 22 mile mark and succumbed to walking. Soon after, Peter caught up to me and gently encouraged me to keep running, and it was the way he managed to motivate me to keep going and that he stuck with me throughout to the finish line, that I will always remember.  

My condolences to Julie and Pete’s entire family. I had known Peter since 1970, and my first memory of him was when he and I were covering the TAMC Emergency Room on Christmas Day, 1970 - he was a third year surgical resident and I was an internal medicine intern - it was one of the busiest days I can ever recall and Peter helped all of us Newbies survive the ordeal.

Dr. Barcia was a great physician and medical teacher, but he was also a rare example to residents of how to embrace life to the fullest.   Some of my best memories were the warm welcomes to the Barcia dinner table, where most of the food that was served had been caught or grown by the family. Once when Pete invited us to dinner, I declined because my parents and  four elder relatives were visiting from the mainland.  He promptly told me to bring them along.  (I'm pretty sure before we left, my elderly uncle had Dr. B examining his leg for some ailment.) It is difficult to think of a world without Pete Barcia.  Our sincere condolences to Julie and the children and grandchildren, and our thanks to all of you for sharing your lives with us.  Jill Montrey and Bob Enzenauer

It is difficult to adequately portray the amazing force Dad has been in my life and in the lives of countless others. A husband for sixty years, a dad to ten, and a grandfather to more than twenty, Dad served our country and community as an Army surgeon for his entire career. He was passionate about everything he did, and he was constantly doing something, bringing one or more of us along for the ride. He finished 58 marathons and countless triathlons with  his children, daughters and sons in laws, grandchildren and surgical colleagues at Tripler. He was a master gardener before that was a thing, a baker, a fisherman and a treasure hunter. Dad took endless photos of every single thing that our family did. What a gift those photo reels and albums are for all of us now. We are missing him so much and are so proud to be part of the legacy he dedicated his life to creating. I love you, Dad. Thank you for it all.

LOVED Dr Barcia as Chief of Surgery at Tripler. As Chief Nurse, we worked together on many issues and I learned he was not only a great surgeon, great leader and mentor, but also an incredible athlete and a most kind and compassionate person to patients and staff. During mango season, countless buckets of mangoes started to arrive. After the annual fishing trip to Alaska, he shared salmon stories galore. When there was a fun run, he’d take the lead…not to mention followed by his whole family of athletes. Over the years after we both left Tripler, I saw him on few occasions but one that was most memorable was when he came back from working at hospital in Kwajalein atoll, Marshall Islands. He said it was not hard work but most endearing was the patient/clinical care he enjoyed. Love you Dr Barcia! You are missed! Julie and family…May God’s grace comfort and keep you. Love, Gar

My father Tom Kilfoyle Sr. met “the Doctor”  and his sons on one of his Alaska trips many years ago 

Their shared love of fishing  made them fast friends and the annual visits that followed were always one of the highlights of summer. Many a cherished memory was made over the years.

Dad was deeply saddened to hear of Peter’s passing. On his behalf, and that of the entire Kilfoyle family, I offer our deepest sympathy. 

As my brother Frank said, we need more like Peter Barcia .. 

Dr. Barcia was a great man.  From him I learned to be a surgeon, learned to treat all my patients with dignity and empathy and maybe most important of all I learned judgement to know when a patient needed my skills and care and also when when they did not. 

He always treated all of us who trained with him like family both in praise and when tough conversations were needed.  This was a great lesson and I have tried to treat others with the same respect.

Dr. Barcia gave me the greatest honor of my professional career when he asked me top perform his kidney transplant at Walter Reed in 1994.  For that honor I am eternally grateful.

Peter was Raymond Wells' best friend since childhood.  Even after Ray moved to Heaven 7/19/2017 from Melbourne, Florida (actually from the very same medical problems which caused Peter to move to Heaven), Peter often found time to call Ray's wife, Jan, to ask how she was doing.  Now that's what best friends do for their buddies.   I remember one yearly, family BBQ at Peter's dad's ranch in north FL,  we were invited to, when Peter told of when he was just a teenager and he operated on his dog's leg to remove it after the dog got tangled up in a barb wire fence.  His brother Paul assisted him with the anesthesia after going in the house to get their mom's cast iron skillet so Peter could cauterize the dog's leg.  Their mom went to where they were, saw the good job Peter had done on his dog and said, "Peter, you're going to be a surgeon."  And  he did!  Jan Wells

Dear Julie and family I am so sorry for your loss . Pete and I served at 85th Evac Hospital as fellow general surgeons. We had some great memories. I have always considered him a great friend. We so enjoyed meeting with Pete and Julie on our trips to Hawaii .. I am so glad I got to talk to him by phone in November when we were there. I am saddened to hear of Pete’s departure from the material world and my sincere condolences go to his wife, Julie, and the entire Barcia family.  However, I know that they take comfort in the conviction that Pete is well placed in the “larger life” and will be with them in their remaining days in this life and waiting to greet them when they, too, make the transition to that “real” world. 

Pete was one of the few people I have known in my 85 years who might be called “the ultimate athlete.”  I’m not referring to honed athletic skills, even though Pete was active in various sporting activities. I’m borrowing from George Leonard’s book, “The Ultimate Athlete.”  As Leonard saw it, “an athlete in the Game of Games  is one who plays life intensely, with heightened awareness of this endeavor. [He is] one who can perceive discord and harmony both, who can accept contradiction as the very stuff of play while not losing sight of the ultimate harmony. An athlete in this Game plays voluntarily and wholeheartedly, even while realizing that this Game is not all that is; knows the rules and limitations of play, and sees beauty in the order thus imposed; seeks to expand any frontier available and yet is not unmindful of ethical imperatives and the needs of others.”  The prize, as Leonard further saw it, is a life fully experienced and examined.   I didn’t know Pete all that well, but from what I did observe, he fit that model perfectly. 

As a physician and surgeon, Pete was a man of science, but he was not a victim of the malady that affects so many scientists –  materialism, or nihilism. His conduct, character, and conviction suggested that he saw beyond the boundaries of science – that consciousness survives death in that larger and more dynamic world, one in which he and his loved ones will be united again.  I hope to see Pete again when I make the transition.    



Our fondest memory of Dr. Barcia is spending Christmas at the Barcia compound. Going to Mass at the same church Jessica’s grandparents went to brought back lots of memories for her.  Christmas dinner was amazing with everyone fitting in place.  Dr. Barcia presiding over his popovers with Yorkshire pudding. The best! Best of all was chatting with Dr. Barcia, sipping port, on anything and everything.
I’m forever gracious on the Barcias’ support and encouragement in challenging me to do those half marathons, cumulating in doing the Honolulu Marathon. I’ll never forget Dr. Barcia and Mrs. Barcia in being there at the finish holding fort down, being our cheerleaders, and support to the end.

Our deepest condolences to your family. We always looked forward to neighborly deliveries of bread, lettuce, and mangoes in season. But what we loved most was the sense of aloha that his smile brought our ohana. We were a Navy family and only neighbors for a few years, but always think of the wonderful welcome the good doctor gave us. May his memory forever be a blessing.

Peter was an inspiration to us all as he touched so many lives with love and goodness.  He will be very missed on earth but our peace lies in knowing how greatly rewarded he is in Heaven. Bye for now, Peter!
