

Ralph "Sonny" Qui Nam Kim, Jr., at age 82, and after just learning in July of his lung cancer diagnosis, on November 14, 2022 at 1:30pm, Ralph “Sonny” Qui Nam Kim, Jr. passed away peacefully in Nuuanu. Sonny’s last view was of loved ones surrounding and holding him. Sonny was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on September 18, 1940 to Evelyn [Hong] and Ralph Qui Nam Kim, Sr. Now also both deceased, Sonny had 2 younger brothers, Clifford Kim and Nathan Kim, who recently also passed on September 25th of this year.
Sonny’s immediate survivors are 7 children, 10 Grandchildren, 1 Great-Grandchild, and his Partner:
-Son, Joel Kim (Jennifer): Granddaughters: Jasmyn Kim, Lily Okimura (Chazz), and Melia Kim (Jose Simosa)
-Son, Jeff Kim (Flo): Granddaughter, Candace, Grandson, Travis, Granddaughter Ashley, Great-Granddaughter, Charlotte, and Grandson Elvis Kim
-Daughter, Mimi “Jenny Girl” Ybanez (Bruce Lerner)
-Daughter, Suyin Phillips (Mark): Grandson, Asher, and Granddaughter, Ava
-Son, Johann Kim
-Son, Clayton Kim (Trisha Okuma)
-Stepson, Jason Pohlman (Kelly Kaye) Grandson, Kai Pohlman
-Virginia Recaido, Partner of 20 years
Sonny lived the majority of his life in the Kaimuki/Waialae area of Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended Roosevelt High School, as well as TIM (School of Travel Industry Management) at the University of Hawaii.
Sonny had a successful military career, from ROTC to the US Air Force (818th Air Division), as well as the US Army Reserve. For over 35 years, he was successful in the Food & Beverage Industry, having owned and managed a catering company in San Francisco, as well as having held Restaurant and Hospitality Management roles in Honolulu.
The family will hold a public memorial service on January 13, 2022 at 11:00am at Hawaiian Memorial Park Chapel in Kaneohe, Oahu, after which Sonny’s ashes will be laid to rest next door at the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery.
