She was born March 17, 1925 to Irvin and Avery Camblin, the youngest of eight children. Her father passed away when she was 10. She always had a close bond with her brother-n-law, Julius Torkelson, because her sister, Ruth Anna and he married, and in their newly married life provided a home for Betty and her Mother and other siblings.
She went to school in Robinson, KS and graduated high school in 1942.
Betty married Lawrence A. Shannon February 16, 1945, in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. Having been married by the Justice of Peace, it was always Betty's wish to renew their vows on their 25th Wedding Anniversary in their church, they were able to do that. They were able to celebrate 70 years of marriage, before Lawrence passed away August 6, 2015.
Having been raised on the farm, she always liked being outside and especially enjoyed taking care of her flowers. The house on Orient Dr, probably still has evidence of that.
With six children, she always kept busy doing laundry on Monday, sewing hand-made clothes, and always having meals on the table. Betty was a good cook and loved to bake. She was active in Church, PTA, Eastern Star and Job's Daughters. Betty enjoyed crocheting, and even taught some classes and judged crocheting at the Wyandotte County 4-H Fairs for years. She also worked on the Election board. Both Betty and Lawrence worked at the Highway Visitors’ Center on holiday weekends giving out donuts and coffee.
They also worked with Kansas City Community Police Academy. She could always find something to keep her busy at home, in the community or at Church.
She always loved having her family with her, visiting, playing cards and hearing what everyone is up to.
Betty is survived by her 6 children, Sheralyn (Warren) Rogers, Basehor, KS, Larry David (Carol) Shannon, Topeka, KS, Linda Kay Owens (Keith, deceased), Basehor, KS, Randy (Barbara) Shannon, Kansas City, KS, Jeanne (David) Caccia, Kansas City, KS, and Janiece (Terry) Huntley, Muscotah, KS. Seven grand children, Marty Arellano, Douglas (Holly) Rogers, Shannon Whalen, Angelia (Brian) Lorenz, Joel (Gena) Arellano, Chris (Kelly) Whalen and Nicholas Whalen. She is also survived by several great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by both parents, and all her siblings and her husband. What a reunion!
A visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 pm, Sunday, May 20th at Chapel Hill – Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th St., Kansas City, KS. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, May 21st at Mount Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha, KS 66434.
