September 8, 1936 – May 4, 2026
Calvin Douglas Day, better known as Doug, was 89 years old when he went to be with the Lord on May 4, 2026. He will be remembered as a man of deep faith, steady character, and wide-ranging interests, as well as for the love he showed to his family, church, and friends.
Doug graduated from college in 1959 with majors in mathematics and physical education. He began his teaching and coaching career at Lebo High School in Lebo, Kansas, where he taught math and coached football. After 6 years of teaching, he began a new career in computer programming, working for TWA and then the FAA until retirement. Doug loved sports throughout his life, playing football and track in high school, then as an adult playing fast-pitch softball for more than 20 years and later enjoying tennis and golf. He also loved riding motorcycles, whether in the desert of Saudi Arabia, the mountains of Colorado, or simply to and from work on a beautiful day. While working for TWA, he and his family lived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for three years, giving Doug and Nancy the opportunity to travel throughout the Middle East and Europe. More important than anything else was his faith. He attended Gashland Evangelical Presbyterian Church from 1974 until his passing, where he faithfully attended Sunday School, enjoyed discussing the Bible, and sang tenor in the choir for many years. He especially treasured the years when the choir was directed by his wife, Nancy, and took great pride in her. In later years, Doug also enjoyed reading, writing poems, submitting opinion pieces to the Kansas City Star, and completing his memoir in 2007.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Irba and Velma Day; his brothers, Richard Day and John Day; and his sister, Chrystal Charlson. He is survived by his children, Karen Cubon and Kevin Day; his daughter-in-law, Monica Day; his grandchildren, Mikaela Cubon, Nathan Day, and Ryan Day; his step-grandchild, Courtney Conway; his sister-in-law, Carolyn Day; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A visitation will be on Friday, June 12, 2026 from 10:00-11:00 am at the Gashland Evangelical Church, 8029 North Oak, Kansas City, MO 64118. Followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 am at the church.
