Don was born in Tuscumbia, Missouri, on September 4, 1938. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Ruby Hawken; his sister, Sharon Briscoe; and his son, Donald (Donnie Boy) Wayne Hawken Jr.. Don is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Sandra Hawken; sister Helen Hawken; his son Reverand Michael Hawken (Lenexa, KS); his daughter, Jodi Hendrix (Merriam, KS); and his stepsons, Brian (Julie) Marshall (Neveda, MO) and John (Shari) Marshall (Nashville, TN). He is also survived by 10 grandchildren Sydney Hendrix, Alec Hendrix, Elizabeth Hendrix, Reese Hendrix, Brianna Raymond, Brittanie Marshall, Brendan Marshall, Dustin Marshall, Nicholas Marshall and Ashley Marshall and his 7 great grandchildren.
Don was a devoted and longtime member of the Local 1594 Painters, Drywall Finishers, and Allied Trades. Throughout his many years as a journeyman drywall finisher in the Kansas City metro area, he approached his craft with exceptional skill and unwavering pride. Don was widely respected for his dedication, his meticulous workmanship, and the strong work ethic that defined his career and character.
A man of many talents and interests, Don truly enjoyed life outside of work. He was a consummate fishing enthusiast, happiest when near the water. He also had a lifelong love of motorcycles and an undeniable passion for lawn equipment. Over the years, Don managed to collect more than his fair share of weed eaters and leaf blowers, a collection that became a source of humor and fond memories for family and friends. Additionally, Don was an avid sports fan who loved cheering on his Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals.
Don accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of 35 and remained a faithful and devoted servant for the remainder of his life. He attended Hope Chapel Legend. Over the years he faithfully served in various capacities as a church bus driver, Sunday school teacher, deacon, and church board member. Don had a deep love for sharing the Good News of the Gospel and found great joy in leading others to a saving relationship with Jesus Christ. His faith was evident both in his words and in the way he lived his life.
Don will be remembered for his steadfast faith, hard work, generous spirit, and the love he had for his family and church. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched.
