

Forrest J. “Curly” McCowan, 87, of Basehor, Kansas, passed away February 8, 2017 at home. Memorial services will be 4:00 p.m., Saturday, February 11th at Chapel Hill - Butler Funeral Home, 701 North 94th Street, Kansas City, KS 66112. Memorial donations may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice.
Curly was born July 12, 1929 in Roscoe, Missouri to Vinson and Beulah (Culbertson) McCowan. He married the love of his life, Thelma Schoenfeld on May 18, 1948 and they enjoyed 68 years of marriage until her passing in December. They raised five boys together. Curly owned several businesses, C & M Truck Repair and Louis’ Keg and retired from First Fleet as a truck driver. He and Thelma enjoyed riding motorcycles together in their youth and they had a passion for working on their farm and taking care of their cattle. Curly also enjoyed pheasant hunting and working his trout lines. He always enjoyed a full house of friends and family and had a big and generous heart. When he could, Curly also enjoyed heading to the boats for a bit of gambling. He always took care of his family and made sure they had whatever they needed.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Thelma McCowan; his parents, Vinson and Beulah (Culbertson) McCowan; and his siblings, James Lynn McCowan and his wife Patricia, Verl Rae McCowan, and Ruby Faye West.
Curly is survived by his children, Kenneth McCowan and his wife Zelda of Kansas City, KS, Dennis McCowan and his wife Deborah of Kansas City, KS, Forrest McCowan of Basehor, KS, Gary McCowan and his wife Sandra of Kansas City, KS, and Randall McCowan of Basehor, KS; his brother, Roy McCowan and his wife Jeanette of Conway, MO; his sister-in-law, Ruby Darlene McCowan of El Dorado Springs, MO; nine grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and other family and friends.
