Herbert Bruce Jaynes, age 76, of Kansas City, Kansas known to his friends as "Herbie," took his final ride on April 1, 2025, at the age of 76. Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, on February 13, 1949, Herbie spent his life bringing joy and laughter to everyone around him. At the time of his passing, he resided in Kansas City, Kansas, a place he called home for many years.
Herbie's life was a tapestry of service, humor, and community spirit. After graduating from Atchison High School in 1967, he took to the seas with the Navy in May 1970, embracing adventure and duty. A mechanic by trade, Herb's hands were as skilled in the garage as they were in making people laugh. He was the life of any party, armed with quick wit and a heart full of kindness.
For 30 years, Herbie was a proud member and sponsor of Alcoholics Anonymous, guiding countless individuals through their journeys. His commitment to helping others was unwavering, a testament to his deep-rooted belief in second chances and redemption.
Herbie's faith was a cornerstone of his life. A member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Atchison, KS, and a parishioner at Bethel Lutheran Church in Kansas City, KS, he lived his beliefs through action and fellowship. Riding with the Christian Motorcyclist Association and donning the mantle of the Order of the Knights Templar, Herbie blended his love for the open road with his spiritual journey.
Family meant the world to Herbie. He leaves behind his loving wife, Kathryn Lynne Jaynes, who was his partner in all of life's adventures. His daughter, Rebekah Lynne Drake and spouse David, and son, Doyle Edwin Grubaugh II and spouse Amber, will forever cherish the lessons and laughter he shared with them. Herbie is also survived by his sister, Sandra Watowa, brother, Don Jaynes, and grandchildren Michelle, Destiny, George and Riley, as well as nieces and nephews who will miss Herbie's unwavering support and infectious humor.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Hazel and Herbert Jaynes, as well as his grandson, Thomas Jeffery Hansen II.
Herbie’s celebration of life will be held at 12 PM, at Chapel Hill, 701 N 94th Street, Kansas City, Kansas 66109. Visitation will be from 10am-12pm. Interment will be at 1:30 pm at Leavenworth National Cemetery. As we gather to honor him, let's remember Herbie not with tears, but with the joy he brought into our lives and the laughter he so generously shared. Herbie may have taken his final ride, but his spirit will continue to rev through the hearts of everyone who knew him.
