John Russell Cooling

John was born in Kansas City, Kansas to William Russell and Grace Cooling, along with his sister Judy, and lived there almost all his life. He graduated from Wyandotte High in 1962. He went onto Kansas City Community College to earn an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice and began his 40 year career as a records clerk for the Kansas State Penitentiary. He married the love of his life, Bunny Sue Ward on August 24th, 1974 and they went on to raise their two daughters, Jennifer and Heather. On August 24th, 2024, they celebrated 50 years of marriage with family and friends.

John found enjoyment in so many aspects of life including his family, many friends, his church, the Kansas City Chiefs, Star Trek, the Camaro Club, and spoiling his granddaughters “Lizzy Lue” and “Mila Sue.”

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Judy Lehman.

Surviving are his wife Bunny; his daughter Jennifer, her husband Ty, and their daughters Lizzy and Mila; his daughter Heather and her husband Bryan; his nephew Thomas R Lehman, his wife Megan and their daughter Poppy; his brother-in-law Thomas L Lehman; his nephew Robert Lehman; and countless more extended family.

A visitation for John will be held Saturday, September 7, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Chapel Hill - Butler Funeral Home, 701 North 94th Street, Kansas City, Kansas 66112, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM.
