Interment will be held at 3:00pm at Sugar Creek Cemetery in Rushville, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.
John was born December 29, 1940 in Craig, Missouri to John D. and Ferne (Couts) Mingee. He graduated high school and worked in customer service in the banking industry. John joined the Army National Guard and was shipped with the 135th Infantry to Vietnam. He was known as “Pappy” to his fellow soldiers, as he joined at the ripe age of 28. John was a field medic and served in Vietnam for 368 days. He met Virginia “Ginny” Schwanke at a singles group and Ginny said that “I either had to marry him or adopt him, because he’s always on my porch!” They married April 7, 1979. John excelled in customer service and never met a stranger. He worked for Westport Bank, the Marine Corps Finance Department, Hub City, and the Pittsburg State University training center. He also worked for the Woodlands racetrack and was always pleased to spend time with the horses, as it had been his dream to be a veterinarian. John had even won a prize belt buckle at a rodeo bareback competition while in the service. He never slowed down and was working at Culver’s at the Legends until very recently, where everyone he met received a clever quip, an ornery joke, or a sweet smile. John was a long time member of both the Tri-County Rod and Gun Club and the Touch of Glass Corvette Club. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ferne Mingee; his son, John Eric Mingee; and half-brother, Jerry Cook.
John is survived by his wife of 38 years, Virginia “Ginny” Mingee; his daughter-in-law, Michelle Barker Mingee; his sisters, Sherry Sampson and her husband Jerry of DeKalb, MO, and Lynelle Mingee of Kansas City, MO; and his brother, Bill Mingee and his wife Cindy of Platte City, MO, many nieces and nephews, as well as great nieces and nephews.
