John Albert Sass passed away peacefully at his home on December 8, 2025.
John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley Ann Sass (McDonald), and their infant daughter.
He is survived by his daughters Joyce (Sam) DePriest, Kimberly (Carl) Bowman, and Leslie (Ben) Kamai; eight grandchildren, Megan Johnson, Barrett Rader, Houston DePriest, Anthony DePriest, Bo Bowman, Gabriel Allenbrand, Leilani Kamai, and Jameson Kamai; and four great-grandchildren, Laila DeCourcy, Isaac DeCourcy, Eli DePriest and Jacoby Johnson. He is also survived by several close friends, including his closest friend, Rusty Roberts.
John was a devoted member of Open Door Baptist Church and remained steadfast in his faith throughout his life. He retired from Kansas City Power & Light after a successful career as a senior planner and later pursued a second career in real estate. An avid cattle farmer and John Deere tractor fan, John took great pride in his work and hobbies. He and his wife Shirley loved to travel, especially enjoying cruises to Alaska and the Panama Canal. John also cherished trips to Panama City Beach, Florida, where he enjoyed dining at Uncle Ernie’s, and he was always a fan of Roscoe’s BBQ in Edwardsville.
When his wife Shirley was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, John retired permanently to care for her full-time. He devoted himself completely to her, always making sure she was loved, safe, and cared for until her passing.
During the last 16 months of his life, John resided at Crestone Assisted Living, where he formed many meaningful friendships. The friends and caregivers he met there became very special to him and brought comfort and companionship during his final chapter.
John will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. John and Shirley will be buried at Leavenworth National Cemetery in the Spring of 2026.
