Katie was born in Shreveport, Louisiana to Gladys Mitchell and the late Willie Grim. She moved with her family to Kansas City, Kansas just before entering High School. She attended Sumner High School and graduated in 1967.
In 1966, the summer before her senior year, she decided to marry her devoted husband, Phillip. He was drafted in the Army in 1967 then decided to make a career of military service. While Phillip was away in the Army, Katie pursued her education. She attained two (2) undergraduate degrees and two (2) graduate degrees. Afterward, she landed a job with the Federal Government. The position was located in the Washington, DC area. So, the family relocated to Maryland close to the job. Phillip retired from the Army and soon followed. Due to his special military skills, he was immediately hired to work for the United States Secret Service.
Katie was passionate about Church and duties in the Church. She was an Ordained Minister, Choir Director, Sunday School Teacher, and on multiple committees.
Katie loved her family. Her daughter--Phillina Cohen. The boys—Robert, Phillip II, and Paul (wife--Akilah). Her grandchildren—Tyrik, Ty’ron, Jessey, Aaliyah, Payton and Paul II. They were the delight and joy of her heart!!!!!!
The entire family will cherish her memory: Mother: Gladys Mitchell, Stepfather: Levell Mitchell-preceded her in death. Her sisters, brother, nieces, nephews, and In-laws: Sandra Easterwood, Lenora Seamster (Elmer—preceded her in death), Stanley Mitchell, Cynthia Mabon (Aaron), Rosetta Milsap, Lydia Weatherspoon, Doris Faye Grim, Brenda Wilson, Gwendolyn Thompson (Jimmy) and Beverly Gaskin (Stanford--both preceded her in death). Plus, her special friends that she has loved throughout the years: Denise Johnson, Janice Atkinson, Karen Chandler, and Nancy McNair.
