Mary Irene Huska, 97, of Basehor, KS, passed away peacefully Friday, August 9, 2024, after a remarkable life of selflessness and of tending to the needs of family, friends and neighbors. Mary was a devout Roman Catholic and member of Holy Angels Catholic Church. Surrounded by the love of her family and friends during her illness, Mary was taken up to heaven by our Lord Jesus Christ to join her parents, Ignacius and Anna, and her ten 10 brothers Joseph, John, Frank, Andrew, Stefan, Anthony, George, Paul, Charles and Lawrence. Visitation will be held Wednesday, 14 August, at 10 am, one hour prior to the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am, Holy Angels Catholic Church, Basehor, KS. Graveside services will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Kansas City, KS.
Mary was born to Ignacius and Anna Huska, on January 29, 1927 and was the youngest and only girl of the 11 children. As a young teenage girl, in 1941 she watched and lived through six of her brothers serving in the United States Military during WW II. She joined her mother and father in prayer for their safe return and God’s grace was bestowed as all six of her brothers returned after serving both in Europe and the Pacific.
Mary worked for Phillips Petroleum prior to tending to both of her parents as the toil of immigrating from what is now Slovakia in 1902, working in mines, taking in boarders, farming, living through the depression, raising their 11 children, left both with illnesses that Mary lovingly cared for. After their passing, her brother Lawrence was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and Mary tended to her brother with the same loving care for nearly 10 years. As a last act of love, Jesus used Mary to help reconnect her nephew Richard with Huska cousins in Slovakia that we never knew we had. Only because of Mary’s knowledge and notes, have the Huska’s here in the USA been recently able to reconnect with their cousins and visit them in Slovakia and to see where Ignacius and Anna were born and immigrated from. Thank you Jesus and Aunt Mary. This will be Mary Huska’s legacy. Mary leaves her nieces, Betty Joyce Bruce, Paula Ann Kenozora, GeorgeAnn Miller and Romona Washburn, her nephews, Stephen Huska, Richard Huska, Michael Huska and Ronald Huska.
