Mary E. Atwell Rowland

Mary Elizabeth Rowland, beloved wife, mother, sister and friend, passed away at home Friday, Sept. 23, 2011. Mary was born March 19, 1923, in Troy Alabama, the first child of John and Myrtle Atwell. In 1942, while he was stationed at Fort Rucker Alabama, she met and married Leslie G. Rowland. Upon his return from the war, they settled in his native state of Kansas, where Mary was a resident of Wyandotte County for over 60 years. They enjoyed a loving marriage for 48 years until his death in 1991. They had one child, a daughter, Anne. Mary was a Baptist and her faith and strength of spirit saw her through many difficult health issues. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister, Jean Delcour, two brothers, Robert Herman Atwell and William Glen Atwell. She is survived by her daughter, Anne Rowland of the home; a sister, Louise Munch of Roseville California, a brother, John C. Atwell of Troy Alabama, a brother Michael Atwell and his wife Ellen of Herndon Virginia. She also leaves behind her beloved pets, Squeaky, Bitsy and Diego. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at the Chapel Hill Butler Funeral Home. Burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday September 27, 2011, at the Chapel Hill Butler Funeral Home.
