

Paul E. Steeby, Sr., 90 of Basehor, Kansas, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2013 at Medicalodge of Leavenworth, Kansas. Private Inurnment Services will be held at a later date in Glenwood Cemetery, Basehor, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Paul’s Name to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Paul was born October 12, 1922 in Neodesha, Kansas to Roland K. and Estha Lee (Short) Steeby. The last surviving member of his crew, after graduating from High School in Howard, Kansas, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy, where he served as a Master Machinist on the USS Spearfish submarine, where he was active in the many assignments the Spearfish undertook during World War II in the South Pacific, such as The Battle of Corregidor, and the Nurse Rescue Mission during Deathmarch. After his discharge in 1946, he moved to Kansas City, where he served in the Navy Reserves until 1950, when he was fully discharged, and moved to Basehor, Kansas. Paul worked for Phillips Petroleum, New Holland, Symons Concrete Forms, and most recently for The United States Postal Service, before retiring in the mid-1980’s.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lillie Pearl Lyman Steeby when she passed April 14, 1993.
Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Avis Steeby of the home; 2 sons, Paul E. Steeby, Jr. of Wellsville, Kansas and Roy Steeby of Basehor, Kansas; 2 grandchildren, David Steeby and Laura Fisher; and 3 great grandchildren, Natalia, Isaac, and Reuben.
