

Robert Earl Shurtz, 88, of KCK, passed away Wednesday, February 26th at home surrounded by family. Visitation will be from 10-noon, Tuesday, March 4th at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th St., KCK, with funeral services to follow at noon at the funeral home. Interment with Honors will follow the service in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Maywood Community Church, 11201 Parallel Pkwy, KCK 66109.
Robert was born December 10, 1925 in Chanute, Kansas to Harry and Ida Shurtz. He grew up in the Chanute area, attending local schools. Bob enlisted in the Navy when he was 17 and served in the Asian Campaign; while in the Navy, he earned the WWII Victory Medal. After his separation from the Navy in 1946, he then enlisted in the Army in 1947 and served in the Korean War for 4 years, earning the Korean Service Medal with four bronze service stars and two overseas bars. Bob married the love of his life, Vera Mae Taylor on January 17, 1952. He worked for 20 years for Simmons Mattress Company and then retired from the United States Postal Service in 1987. He was a member of the Maywood Community Church, the Simmons Retiree Group, the USS Brown Retirement Club as well as the Club Deluxe Retiree Group. Bob enjoyed gardening and working on his yard, relaxing in the Lake of the Ozarks and spending time with his beloved wife, children, grandkids and great-grandkids.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Ida Shurtz, his seven brothers, Junior, Louis, Howard, Walter, Gene, John and Richard Shurtz and three sisters, Barbara Duarts, Helen Brown, and Gladys Hendrix.
Bob is survived by his wife of 62 years, Vera Mae Shurtz, of the home; one daughter, Diana Aydukovich (Tom) of the Lake of the Ozarks; two sons, Rick Shurtz (Barbara) of Louisburg, KS and Dennis Shurtz (Paula) of Linwood, KS; one sister, Edna Shurtz; eight grandchildren, Renee Tush (Benjamin), Rhonda Keller (Jason), Glen Shurtz, Lori Werth (Joe), Kellie West, Brett Shurtz, Joseph Shurtz (Jenn) and Jamie Shurtz and fifteen great-grandchildren.
