FAITH
Arlene attended Midwestern Baptist Seminary with a focus in biblical studies. She was also an interior designer for the seminary, which began with the president's office. She was particularly focused on the new chapel, and was able to save the seminary a great deal of money in the process! She was head of hospitality for volunteers with Baptist Builders for Christ in their efforts to build the new chapel.
She led numerous women's Bible study groups. Most recently, she was a co-leader with Gary for the Community Bible Study program. Her photographic memory empowered her to absorb an inordinate amount of biblical wisdom which she used in daily conversations.
She exhibited strong faith in daily life and practiced impromptu prayer ministry. For example, when Arlene and Gary would go out to eat, she focused on complimenting staff. At the Corner Cafe’ last Saturday, she praised the server on her beautiful necklace. She then said, "My husband and I always pray before every meal. How can we pray for you today?" The server replied, "For my mother and grandmother please."
FAMILY
Arlene’s family meant everything to her! Gary has been her soulmate for 29 years; she always placed his needs above her own and helped him in every way. Some of the most memorable times in their marriage were traveling all over the world. One of her favorite trips was to the Holy Land walking where Jesus had walked.
Her daughters Robin, Erin and Christene, and their families, totaling 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, were the highlight of her life. She absolutely treasured their love and devotion!
COMMUNITY
Arlene was involved in numerous civic organizations including, most recently, The New Theatre Scholarship Guild where she held various board positions.
She was also president of the Symphony Women's Association, Chairman of the Silent Auction for the Lyric Opera Guild, and she worked with the Art Institute guilds among various other associations.
POLITICS
Arlene's passion, as many know, was politics, and she had fun with it. She spent countless hours researching events beyond “fake news” and was all too glad to offer her opinion, sometimes if not even asked! According to Gary, she described herself as “just to the right of Attila the Hun.” He thinks that may be an understatement!
Arlene was petite in stature, yet had a huge heart and left a large footprint throughout her life. She loved and was devoted to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her last words to Gary were, “If the Lord wants to take me home, I’m ready to go. " She shared this with a smile. Twelve hours later, Gary and Christene held her hand as she went home to be with Jesus.
