
Barbara R. Westervelt, 97, of Kansas City, MO passed away at home on February 15, 2011. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 18th from 9:30-10:30am and rosary will be recited at 10am with funeral service beginning at 10:30am at the McGilley & Sheil Chapel. Burial to follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, 1150 N. 38th St., Kansas City, KS. Barbara was born on February 10, 1914 to Frank and Louise (Vidervolj) Jarnevic in the Strawberry Hill area of Kansas City, KS. She was a devout Catholic and member of Nativity of Mary Church. Barbara was a skilled homemaker and devoted mother who enjoyed spending time with her family and many friends. She was proud of her Croatian heritage and often practiced the Croatian language with her first cousin, Anna Zeljeznjak of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Barbara especially enjoyed caring for her many house plants, outdoor flowers and keeping a beautiful lawn. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; her only child, Harold Dean Hollis on April 7, 1998; her twin sister, Louise Vogal; her sister, Wilma Waters and her husbands, Harold Hollis, John Ruzich and Ernest P. Westervelt. She is survived by two brothers, Frank Jarnevic and wife, Fonda of Amarillo, TX and Charles Jarnevic and wife, Lynn of N. Kansas City, MO; two step-sons, Joe Westervelt and wife, Lucille of Blue Springs, MO and Larry Westervelt and wife, Rosie of Corpus Christi, TX; two step-daughters, Dorothy J. Ross of Memphis, TN and Norma Barncord and husband, Richard of Overland Park, KS; nieces; nephews and cousins all of whom she loved dearly. The family would like to thank Barbara’s many friends for their love, friendship and help when she was unable to do everything for herself. She will be deeply missed by her family and by all who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Nativity of Mary Church or Good Shepherd Hospice.
