He attended public schools in Kennett, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Upon his discharge from the Marines, he continued his education in Kansas City, Missouri, where he earned an Associate’s Degree from Penn Valley Community College.
Bobby developed a love of cars and trucks during his childhood that morphed into a 40-year career as a driver for Goodwill Industries, the American Automobile Association, and finally, L&R Towing. He enjoyed the freedom of being a tow truck driver — a job where he would meet and get to know lots of people while providing customer service in his own special way.
One night while answering a service call, he met his future wife Calma (CJ). After a long friendship, they married in 2001, and celebrated their 15-year wedding anniversary this past June surrounded by friends and family. Within his marriage, he found peace, unconditional love, and someone to blame every time he misplaced his glasses, cell phone — or sandwich!
Bobby’s infectious personality transcended generations… in other words, he could talk to anyone, because he had a genuine interest in people. He was a lifelong learner, seeking to stay current and relatable. His home away from home was the gym, he enjoyed watching boxing, and gearing up to train for PlayStation boxing matches. Bobby never knew a stranger; he had a caring heart, a kind spirit, and could always find a way to make you laugh or smile. Bobby will be missed by all who crossed his path.
Always a smile and rarely a frown, Bobby leaves his loving wife Calma to cherish his memory along with his daughter, Chakira King, and his son, Ronald McHenry; brothers, Robert G. Phillips and Calvin Norse; brothers-in-law, Malvin (Kim) and Calvin Warrick; sister-in-law, Beverly Dickason; nephew Malvin J. Warrick; nieces Sydney Dickason, Brittney and Bethany Warrick; great-nephew, Malachi; great-niece, Kimberlyn, and a host of extended family and friends.
Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00am followed by a funeral service at 11:00am Saturday, February 18, at Swope Parkway United Christian Church, 6410 Swope Parkway, Kansas City, Missouri 64130.
