

Carolyn graduated from Manual High School in 1969 and from Penn Valley Community College in 1988, with 36 hours towards a Fire Science Degree.
Carolyn joined the Kansas City Missouri Fire Department in 1977. Carolyn accomplished several milestones during her career, first by becoming the first Black Female Fire Fighter, with the department. She became an instructor at the Fire Department Training Academy training other fire fighters in handling and operating equipment. She was a member of the following committees within the department: Negotiations Committee, Human Relations Committee, Recruitment Task Force Team, Sexual Harassment Committee and Unity and Diversity Strategy Team.
Carolyn was an active member of the NAACP and APRI Chapters of Kansas City, Missouri. She also served on the Board of Trustees for Women in the Fire Service and was a member of the International Association of Black Professional Fire Fighters since the late 1980's.
Carolyn was a member of St. Peter AME Zion Church.
Carolyn leaves behind one child Rashele Hill; three siblings, Aritha Mitchell, Arthur B. Mitchell Jr., and Cecelia Hamilton; two grandchildren, S'yna Hill and Maliki Hill; special friends, Gail Kelley and Pastor Kenneth Pegue; The Fire Department Family, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many many friends.
A Visitation for Carolyn will be held Wednesday, November 27, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO 64131. A Homegoing Celebration will follow at 11:00 AM. Burial will occur at 12:00 PM at Mount Moriah Cemetery South. A repast will occur Wednesday, November 27, 2024 at 1:00 PM at IAFF Firefighters Local 42, 6320 Manchester Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri 64133.
