Our fun-loving, hardworking father and grandfather, Chad Henry Mickelson, took his last breath on Thursday, February 27, 2025 at the age of 78. He was born on February 11, 1947 in Gunnison, Utah and he grew up in Ogden, UT.
His career as a Jet Engine Technician for the Air Force took him to Hill Air Force in Utah and Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. Chad explored Europe and Asia creating cherished memories alongside his first wife, Laura Connolly, while stationed with the Air Force in Guam, Thailand, and Madrid, Spain, where his first two daughters were born. After his time on active duty, Chad returned to the states and continued working in civil service for the Air Force and Air Force Reserves. Known for his tireless work ethic, Chad often juggled multiple jobs, which gave him the opportunity to share his passion and cook as a chef. Retirement from the Air Force couldn’t keep him away from people, which was why his next endeavor as greeter for Walmart was so perfect for him and led to management positons.
Chad loved his children and loved spoiling them. Caring for babies was perhaps his favorite pastime. His dedication extended to his faith, as he served in The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints in Glen Burnie and Pasadena, Maryland. He taught Gospel Essentials for many years and served as Ward Mission Leader, opening his home for the missionaries to live. He loved feeding them and taking care of them, which worked well with his habit of only making large amounts of food. He was joined in this passion by his dear wife, Annie. He was known for his unique renditions of songs, his incessant teasing, and his spontaneous trips to the beach or an amusement park.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie, parents, Abraham LeRoy and Betty, granddaughter, Daniella, brother Kent, and sister-in-law, Kathy. He is survived by his brothers, Craig (Sherri), Lynn, Calvin, and Scott (Brooke), and sister, Judy (Tom); his children, Heather, Holley (David), Aaron, and Haley (Mike); and his grandchildren, Jefferson, Jackson (Alexis), McKinley, Aiden, Reagan, Austin, Savannah and Rylan.
The family would like to thank The Healthcare Resort of Leawood for caring for Dad in the last 5 years as his health declined. Their love him for him was evident by their sweet send off and sweet memories they shared of their dear friend. Thank you to Harbor Hospice and Menorah Medical Center for the care and compassion they showed our father in his final days.
Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of his life at The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints, 13025 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO 64145 on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation with the family will begin at 9:30 a.m. Interment to follow on Monday, March 31st at 11:00 a.m. at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; stjude.org
