Charlotte E. Scanlon, age 98, passed away on August 24, 2024, at her home in Kansas City, MO. She was born on June 21, 1926, in Kansas City, Missouri to Joseph and Mary Magerl and was the youngest of six siblings. She attended Sacred Heart Grade School, and her high school years were spent at the Ursuline Academy in Paola, Kansas, where she graduated in 1944. She worked at her brother’s store, Johnny’s Market, United Film, and at Upjohn Pharmaceuticals before marrying Edward T. Scanlon, who was a firefighter on the force of the Kansas City Fire Department. The couple lived in Good Counsel Parish in the Westport area, before moving to St. Louis Parish. Eventually they moved to St. Catherine’s Parish in south Kansas City, where they raised two children, Mary (Becvar) and Eddie, who attended grade school there, and sent both children to Archbishop O’Hara High School. After her husband died in 1977, Charlotte returned to work at the American Academy of Family Physicians until she retired in 1991. Charlotte attended Mass at St. Matthew’s Parish for many years until the parish closed, and then returned to St. Catherine’s in her last year. She became a member of St. Thomas More Parish after St. Catherine’s closed in 2023.
Charlotte was a smart, kind, generous, and often quiet woman who cared deeply about others in her family, friendship circles, and church community. She also cared a great deal about the poor and volunteered at Bishop Sullivan Center serving meals for the hungry. She was especially proud of making rosaries for prisoners and soldiers with the Rosary Group at St. Catherine’s and St. Matthew’s and formed strong friendships there. Charlotte loved to make quilts, read (she could frequently be seen at the Mid-Continent Public Library perusing bookshelves and eventually learned how to order books online), and to watch the Royals on TV. She loved shopping, if only to browse, and took pride in her appearance, with weekly visits to the beauty shop for many years. She was an amazing cook and seamstress and made her own clothes and clothes for her children when they were young. Her faith and family mattered to her the most and she was especially devoted to the Blessed Mother. For a number of years, she attended Mass every morning and recited the rosary and her novenas daily. She kept an array of cards at home and never missed an opportunity to send a birthday greeting or condolence card.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward Scanlon; her parents; and her five siblings, John Magerl, Joseph Magerl, Stephen Magerl, Anna Marie Martin, and Frances Smith. Survivors include daughter Mary Becvar (Fred), son Edward Scanlon, grandson Tyler Becvar (Becky), granddaughter Lydia Becvar, a great-granddaughter, Chloe Becvar, and many nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren. She was always especially grateful for the kindness and support received from her niece Paula Sheridan, nephew Joseph M. Magerl, and neighbor Cynthia Lindquist. All of us are so grateful for our time with Charlotte, and will miss her a great deal, but are comforted by her joy at being reunited with family and friends who preceded her in death.
Services will be held at St. Thomas More Parish on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, with the Rosary beginning at 9:15 a.m., followed by a visitation and Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. A private family graveside service will follow immediately after Mass.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Bishop Sullivan Center in Kansas City, MO.
