July 24, 1946 - May 2, 2018
Dan McGrew, husband, father, brother, step-grandfather, father-in-law, among other titles, and a true best friend to all who knew him, passed away Wednesday, May 2, at his home with his wife and best friend, Mary Denise, at his side, along with beloved Mini Australian Shepherd, Murphy, and his slightly overweight cat, Tigger, nearby.
Born July 24, 1946, in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Lester and Gloria McGrew, Dan grew up there and was a graduate of South East High School. During the Vietnam War, Dan served his country in the United States Air Force. A proud veteran, he would always shake hands and thank those in uniform for their service to our country at every given opportunity. Dan worked for Hilton Hotels Properties in Overland Park, Kansas, until he retired in 2011 and moved to sunny Las Vegas, Nevada, with Mary Denise.
Dan truly embraced life and knew what it meant to “Live Lucky” every day just as his treasured Clover hat states. Lucky in love and on the golf course, he was an ardent golfer. His pursuit for greatness on the greens eventually resulted in the ever sought magical and highly coveted hole-in-one made on #4 at Wildhorse Golf Course early last year, commemorated with a trophy he spoke of often, as well as an Eagle he made on a Par 5.
Dan continued to play on and as the years passed so did his hearing. Upon receiving a hearing aid and discovering what his wife’s voice actually sounded like, he realized that it was okay not always hear the conversations around him. Instead, Dan would always smile and nod whenever anyone spoke to him which made everyone laugh.
Along with golf, Dan loved his roses, traveling, sunrises and sunsets, spending time with family, and was a lover of slow-cooked barbecue. He was famous for his dry-rub ribs and always made terrific pies.
In March, he returned from his first cruise that occurred during March Madness which was fitting since he was a sports enthusiast and an avid fan of Kansas Basketball (never a bracket winner, unfortunately), Kansas City Chiefs and NASCAR. A true outdoorsman, he loved cars, motorcycles, shooting skeet, fishing, boating sightseeing and always ready for a new adventure. Due to his well-known addiction FaceBook, Dan could always be counted on to reply quickly to text messages and he would always say “I love you” without hesitation and was a loving man.
Dan McGrew was preceded in death by his brothers, Lester and Steve McGrew. He is survived by his wife, Mary Denise; his sons Justin and Tommy McGrew; siblings, Linda Tucker, Mark and Tim McGrew; three step-children, Jennifer Blumberg, Jeff Brownlee and Melissa Bachochin; nine grandchildren, Brendan, Sarah, Corbin, Chance, Caitlyn, Camden, Cole, Ashley and Amanda; along with loving nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of long-time friends.
Please join the family on Saturday, June 2, 2018 for "A Celebration of Life" that will be at 2:00 pm at Floral Hills Funeral Home, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64133. A Color Guard Military Interment will follow at the family plot at Floral Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to The American Cancer Society.
