David was born on January 15, 1942, in Liberty, Missouri, to Edward B. Cathy and Alice Mae Mitchell Cathy, whom preceded him in death. David was the third of five children. He graduated from Liberty High School in 1960, where he enjoyed playing basketball, baseball, and participating in track. "His early love for sports grew into a lifelong passion, especially for watching all kinds of sports. He and his brothers proudly remained devoted Kansas City Chiefs season ticket holders for over 40 years."
David's first job was with the Kappa Alpha fraternity, where he worked for several years before moving on to Cable-Dahmer Chevrolet. In February 1965, he began his career journey with Ford Motor Company, where he served in multiple roles over the years. After 41 years of dedicated service, David retired in February 2006. "There was something about crossing the 40-year mark that intrigued David, a milestone that seemed to become a recurring theme throughout his life."
"In 1976, he met Shirley, and in 1982 they married. Through their union, they created a warm and loving blended family."
David's spiritual journey began in his childhood at First Baptist Church of Liberty. In 1981, influenced by Shirley, he attended Palestine Missionary Baptist Church, where he remained attending until his passing.
He was preceded in death by his brother Don. David is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Shirley; his children Mario (Holly); Natalie (Lamin); Latitia (Tim) Charles "Randy" and Ryan; grandchildren Tyson, Sydney, Xavier, and Aria; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
"David lived life to the fullest, embracing his roles as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His warm heart, unwavering dedication to family and church, and infectious laugh will be forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him."
