Dennis Bean passed from this life unexpectedly on September 23, 2021. He was born on June 9, 1945, in Lucas, Kansas, to Olin and Nathalie (Libal) Bean. Dennis met the love of his life, Sandy Schmitt, when they were students at Fort Hays State College (now University). They were married on June 7, 1969, and recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary.
Dennis grew up in Phillipsburg, Kansas, and graduated from Phillipsburg High School. He attended Fort Hays State College where he was a member of the football team. After receiving his undergraduate degree, he and Sandy moved to Warrensburg, Missouri, where Dennis was a graduate assistant and football coach at Central Missouri State College. After receiving his master’s and specialist degrees from Central Missouri, Dennis accepted a position on the football coaching staff at St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City, Kansas. Dennis and Sandy then moved to St. Joseph, Missouri, where he coached at Missouri Western State College. Dennis coached at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, before returning to Fort Hays State University to coach the Tigers at his alma mater. Dennis concluded his coaching career at Wyandotte High School before transferring his leadership skills from coaching into sales and marketing at various concrete companies in the greater Kansas City area.
Dennis was a quintessential sports fan – from his beloved Kansas City Chiefs, to the Kansas Jayhawks, to the KC Royals, to car racing and horse racing.
