Dennis was born on November 19, 1948, to Paul and Clara Beatty. After graduating from Southwest High School, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy for four years. He was deployed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal for his service.
Following his military career, Dennis earned an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration from Penn Valley Community College. He then joined the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department in 1976, where he dedicated his career to protecting his community. He retired as a Captain in 2004. During his time with the department, Dennis furthered his education by earning a degree in Fire Science from the University of Missouri–Kansas City.
Dennis’s commitment to service extended well beyond his professional life. He was known for his daily walks through his neighborhood, where he picked up litter and returned shopping carts to stores. He was a regular blood donor and generously supported numerous charities.
Outside of his service, Dennis enjoyed hunting with his brother Doug and close friends, hanging out at Kelly’s and eating at Stroud’s. He was also a master of the grill and smoker, winning awards for his culinary skills. His famous ribs, turkey, and salmon were staples at gatherings, always accompanied by his signature BBQ sauce blend. His presence and cooking will be deeply missed at family events.
Though Dennis never married, he built a family of his own through his long-time neighbors and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Clara Beatty, and his sister, Deborah Mansell. He is survived by his brother, Douglas Beatty; three nephews; two nieces; eleven great-nieces and nephews; five great-great-nieces and nephews; and a wide circle of extended family and friends who cherished him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, or Habitat for Humanity—organizations that held deep meaning for Dennis.
