

Donald Harry Pope, 72, Overland Park, KS, passed away April 22, 2012, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron. He was born May 24, 1939, near Montreal, MO, to Harry and Mildred Pope. Don graduated from East High School in Kansas City in 1957 and attended college in Warrensburg, MO. Don served four years in the USAF in Texas. Don was a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local No. 2. He was owner/operator of Midland Sheet Metal, Co., Inc., for 30 years. Don was an Eagle Scout, a Freemason, and member of the Church of the Resurrection United Methodist in Leawood. Carole Van Son Burhans and Don married in 1990. They enjoyed many years RVing, with weekends at Rocky Top in Warsaw, MO and winters in Yuma, AZ. The couple traveled extensively in the US and enjoyed foreign travel also. Don was preceded in death by his parents, his infant sister Eva Doris and two stepsons David and Scott Burhans. Survivors include his wife Carole; his three children Sharon Hammack (Gary), Gregory Pope (Maggie), and Stephen Pope; his stepdaughter Kristen McCullough; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; the mother of his children Gladys; siblings Neta Pope, NM, Warren Pope (Ruth), IL, Susan Hilliard (Vernon), MO; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Don was outgoing, never met a stranger, and will be missed by all who knew him, including family pets, Cricket and Romeo. Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, April 27, at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Rd., with visitation preceding services from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
