DOROTHY ELIZABETH HILL Dorothy Elizabeth Hill, 88, of Lee’s Summit, MO passed away on September 9, 2015 at KC Hospice House surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jack, her parents, Roy Alva and Carrie Cora (Sandberg) Pittman, her brother, Vernon, and sister, Vivian. Dorothy was born in Kansas City, Kansas on April 3, 1927. Dorothy grew up mostly in the Kansas City area and graduated from Breckenridge High School in Breckenridge, MO in 1946. After graduation, she moved to Los Angeles, California, to be near her sister and family, and where she soon met her future husband, Jack. He impressed her on their first date by taking her flying in a WWII surplus Piper J-3 Cub airplane that he and a friend had purchased in crates and assembled themselves. Just in case they had a bad landing, she often said she put a $20 bill in her shoe so that she would have money for a cab ride home if necessary. She and Jack were married on July 8, 1949, in San Pedro, California. There they had two daughters, Mary and Nancy, and returned to Kansas City in 1955 where they made their home for the next 35 years. Jack died in 1989, and Dorothy then resided with her daughter, Nancy, for the next 25 years. Dorothy worked for the VA Medical Center in Kansas City. In her retirement she became an accomplished genealogist and spent thousands of hours traveling the country and researching the Pittman, Sandberg, Oxford, Hill and Wagy family trees. She was fortunate in life to have very good friends, Helen Gainer, Dorothy Heinerikson and Herb Simon, who have all passed before her. Dorothy leaves her daughters, Mary Moore (Chuck) of Lee’s Summit, and Nancy L. Hill of the home; 2 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews, Larry, Sharon, Gary, Ralph and Angie. In addition, she leaves her faithful dog and companion, Lucky, who was a lucky dog when she saw him at Wayside Waifs. Dorothy will be greatly missed by her family, but they are happy that she will be reunited with her husband and parents, brother and sister, nephews and granddaughter, and wonderful friends. A private service will be held with burial at Floral Hills Cemetery. Her family wishes to thank KC Hospice House for their loving care, especially Julie D, Jennifer, Sherry, and Julie A, and to Natalie Burris of The Caring Heart for her special care and companionship. Dorothy loved animals and donations may be made in her memory to Wayside Waifs at 3901 Martha Truman road, Kansas City, MO 64137 or Kansas City Pet Project at 4400 Raytown Road, Kansas City, MO 64129.
