Edith M. DeMaria passed away December 4, 2025 at Villa St. Francis Catholic Care Center. Edith was the daughter of the late Anthony Edward and Mary (Maggio) Scardino. She was born September 5, 1930 In Kansas City, MO. She graduated from Northeast High School and William Woods College in Fulton, MO. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Language and Literature from Kansas City University in 1951.
Edie married Victor DeMaria on June 14, 1951. Their first of four children was born in 1954. From that time Edie devoted herself to raising children and creating a warm and loving home. She was an avid gardener and needleworker and enjoyed entertaining family and friends. During this time she took an active part in the administration of her husband’s real estate business and volunteered in programs to benefit her church and the children’s schools. In 1964, Edie and a friend initiated a Spanish conversation group including people from various Hispanic nations. This group met for almost fifty years, helping its members maintain fluency in the language, while enjoying the friendships that ensued. From 1973 to 1980 Edie worked outside the home as a real estate appraiser and an editor.
Although Edie’s many interests kept her active, she believed her most important role was to be a loving and supportive mother. She was unfailing in her efforts to provide not just the basics but also so much more. She guided their educations and cultural experiences with each child’s needs, talents and interests in mind. She orchestrated fun! Picnics, neighborhood art shows and tea parties, and cooking lessons are examples of the many ways she created happy memories for her children. When one of them suffered a disappointment, she was always there with an encouraging word and practical support. Through the years weddings, graduations and achievements were all celebrated with Edie’s special touch.
As a grandmother, Edie was always involved in the lives of her grandchildren. “Grandma” could be counted on to provide childcare, attend school and sports activities, and participate in all the grandchildren’s important life events. Her influence on her family has been profound and her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are so blessed by her loving example.
Her family was not the only beneficiary of her nurturing ways. Her friends and the staff at Villa St. Francis, her home these past seven years, have appreciated her generous spirit and love, too. Edie’s family is so grateful for these relationships that supported her in her later life.
Edie is survived by her children and their spouses Michele Brogan (Dave), Steven DeMaria (Laura), Diane Palmer (Kelly), and Anthony DeMaria (Becky), grandchildren Michaela Bradshaw (Ray), Victoria D’Amico (Sebastian), Will Palmer (Melissa), Carrie Hagan (Mark), Dan Brogan, Jasper Joseph DeMaria (Tara), Nicole Pointelin (Jon), Jessica Ogilvie and Edie’s 21 great-grandchildren. Also she is survived by sisters in-law Edel DeMaria (Peter T.) and Kathie Scardino (Anthony E.) and other extended family including her nieces and nephews.
