Edward L. Drake

Ed Drake of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2026, surrounded by his family and the love he so freely gave throughout his life. He was born on February 23, 1938, to Harold and Alma Drake. A lifelong Kansas Citian, Ed was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, labor leader, and community member.

Throughout his life, Ed remained deeply committed to his hometown, as well as to his family, friends, and those in need. He invested his time, energy, and heart into the community he believed in—one that shaped the man he became.

Ed believed strongly in service, loyalty, and responsibility—values he developed early during his time in the Boy Scouts where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout and became a Warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. The guiding principles of scouting stayed with him throughout his life and led him to a career as an electrician and respected labor leader.

Ed shared 65 years of marriage with his grade school sweetheart and the love of his life, Doris. Their partnership was filled with devotion, laughter, and a shared spirit of adventure. Together, they traveled the world with family and friends, gathering stories, memories, and lasting friendships. Ed never met a stranger; he had a remarkable ability to strike up a conversation and make a friend wherever he went.

A devoted father and grandfather, Ed cherished his family above all. He was especially proud of his children, Mike and Tracey, and their accomplishments. He was a loving grandfather to Lexie, Danny, Lily, and Dylan, and showed his affection through simple joys—Tootsie Pops, teaching moments, storytelling, and endless warmth.

Ed was a passionate and steadfast supporter of organized labor. He dedicated 65 years to the labor movement, serving as president of IBEW Local 124 for 16 years and as president of the AFL-CIO Labor Council for 8 years. He believed deeply in advocating for working people and gave countless hours to mentoring, leading, and serving with integrity and conviction.

An avid reader and gifted storyteller, Ed delighted in sharing tales from his life—often slightly embellished, always engaging, and delivered with humor and charm. His stories, like his presence, filled every room with warmth and laughter.

Above all, Ed Drake was a man who gave freely—of his time, wisdom, service, and kindness. His commitment to Kansas City, to organized labor, and to his family and friends leaves a lasting legacy that will endure for generations. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Ed is survived by his wife, Doris Drake; his son, Mike Drake (Sandy); his daughter, Tracey Vaeth (Chris); his grandchildren, Lexie, Danny, Lily, and Dylan; his sister, Doris Robbins; and extended family members.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 30 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a brief service to begin at 6:30 p.m. at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, MO 64145. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Ed’s life.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ed’s memory may be made to Children’s Mercy Hospital or the Alzheimer’s Association.
