He was born at home on April 15, 1933, in Kansas City, MO. His parents were Luella Haupt and Elmer Lee Haupt Sr.
Elmer was married to Joan Alberta Haupt on August 26, 1956. They have three children, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Full of ambition and tenacity, Elmer was a man of significant accomplishment. After a lengthy career as a salesman with Carnation and then Sherwood Medical Company, Elmer joined his friend Dick Braden to create a new - now multi-million dollar - company called Thrift Marketing, Inc. As Vice-President, Elmer traveled far and wide to promote their “Thrift Odorless Drain Cleaner” product to plumbing suppliers across the country. In his late seventies/early eighties, Elmer also wrote two self-published spy/thriller novels.
Elmer and his family joined the Jehovah's Witnesses in 1960. He served as an elder for many years as an excellent orator and counselor.
Elmer lived with his wife, Joan, in their Kansas City home for 57 years until her passing in 2018. He lived with his son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Wanda Haupt, for two years before moving to Benton House.
An active man, Elmer loved to play golf, walk, and exercise at the Y. He also enjoyed watching old classic movies and sports (tennis, golf, the Chiefs and the Royals), listening to music from the 50s, dining out, and visiting with friends and family. He read voraciously, liked to fish, and enjoyed taking his boats out at their lake house in the Ozarks.
Elmer was also a clever man and a fantastic storyteller who reveled in lively, thoughtful conversation. His sense of humor and jovial spirit will be greatly missed by all of us.
Elmer is survived by his children Bradley Haupt (Aunie Haupt), Jeffrey Haupt (Wanda Haupt), and Stephanie Ann Banks-Haupt (Natalie Banks-Haupt); grandchildren Brianne Haupt, Ramie Cathey (JC), Seth Haupt (Jordyn), and Issa Banks-Haupt; great-grandchildren Charley Rose and Corey Lynn Cathey; niece Cheryl Klein; and many great and great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Haupt; his parents, Elmer Lee Sr. and Louella Haupt; parents-in-law, Charlotte and Albert Jeffcoat; sister and brother-in-law, Betty Lou and Francis Leroy French; siblings-in-law, Gary Thomas and Larry Thomas; and pet dogs Coco, Schnitzel, Coco Gabrielle Chanel, and Shadow.
