Gerald F. Mellon age 86, Overland Park, KS, passed away March 29, 2018, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at Church of the Nativity, 3800 W. 119th Street, Leawood, KS. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas.
Gerald was born November 28, 1931 in Peoria, IL. He graduated high school from Spalding Institute in Peoria in 1950. He attended college at Loras College in Dubuque, IA. He served in the army during the Korean War. He worked for the City of Kansas City, Missouri from 1967 to 1992 holding several Director positions. He was co-founder of the Intra-mural basketball league, Christ the King Church, Kansas City, MO., 1968. He was a past member of the Board of Directors for the Community Alcohol and Drug Programs, 1971. He volunteered his time at the Kansas City Animal Shelter. He was a part-time professor, teaching business writing courses at Columbia College Extension, Kansas City, MO. He loved the great outdoors. He was a Board Member of the Heart of America Boy Scout Council and was involved in the Catholic Diocesan Committee on Scouting, Campfire and Youth. He loved his parents, sister, nieces and nephew as well as his daughter. He was loved by many.
He is survived by his daughter Sandra, of Minnesota, and his sister, Eunice Mellon Saum of Hendersonville, NC.
